I think people who get big dogs want protection.

And people who want small dogs want a toy.

I don't really need either.

But my cat has kept me company and so I cherish him.

Big or small dogs and cats all give you companionship. They are really good for that.

The difference is that a dog will endure whatever mistreatment you give them.

Whereas a cat will leave if you mistreat them and find a new owner.
