We want just one more country to join NATO, just one more. But Ukraine borders Russia so we will be playing 'poke the bear'. In 2007 Russian President Putin stated that both Georgia and Ukraine are out of bounds to NATO. The US should be familiar with that reasoning, after all, the US was ready to start a nuclear war over missiles in Cuba, so the US already agrees with it. But we felt the benefit of Ukraine in our alliance was worth it.
Pres. Obama refused lethal aid to Ukraine for fairly obvious reasons such as it wouldn't stop Russia but it would permit more violence inside the country. And the CIA chief knew the technology would end up in other countries. But Joe Biden assured Pres. Zelenskyiii of US backing if he defied Russia, and sent him a large amount of lethal 'aid'. Do you think Biden is right? Is the benefit worth the cost? What can be done now?
What can be done now? Ukraine has a Russian-speaking region in the East and a Ukrainian-speaking West and I would suggest dividing the country in two would allow the East to keep out the Azov fighters.
Well we got two more, Finland and Sweden. Ukraine was never going to be a part of NATO. EU sure. That might happen any day. But that is an economic arrangement not a military one.
I remember when we took out Qasem Soleimani, the Democrats were as outraged as Iranian officials, calling it an assassination, spewing Iranian propaganda. This is Biden on the killing of Soleimani: He said that killing of Soleimani would lead to Iran "ramping up its nuclear enrichment." But I guess having a proxy war with an actual nuclear power is okay?
I'd guess that Biden just does what he is told by the lobbyists. All the lobbyists want an unfair share of the income, each for their own particular business. And that could be why there is no good reason for anything he does.
Violence and corruption within Ukraine would make integrating it into either the EU or NATO problematic. But allegedly the weapons rushed to Ukraine made the attacks on the Donbas region more frequent leading Russia to intervene. And the phone call between Biden and Zelenskyiii was said to be assuring Zelenskyiii of US support against Russia. Perhaps joining NATO remained a distant hope, but here is a picture of V. Zelenskyiii with the Gen. Secretary of NATO:
'In September 2020, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy approved Ukraine’s new National Security Strategy, which provides for the development of the distinctive partnership with NATO with the aim of membership in NATO.' We don't know what went on in the long phone calls between Biden and Zelenskyy, and even if Biden did tell the public, it would be like his remarks on Feb 24th; very misleading if not just outright lies.
I think Zelenskyy should have realized that whether the US or Russia won, using his country to host the battle was likely to cause some damage. And I don't think either the US or Russia has a good reputation for clearing up damage.
