After spending a little time here now, this is my first thread. I realize I'm going out on a limb by trying to create a thread that might be boring to some who have more fun out here wanting to bash Islam or religion in general versus trying to find commonalities.

Is there anyone that would like to have a mature discussion about the similarities between Christianity and Islam?

    There are many.

    Namely:

    • both are Abrahamic
    • both believe in the prophets
    • both believe in the angels
    • both belief in the books (Bible, Torah... Muslims believe additionally in the Qur'an)
    • both believe in heaven and hell
    • both believe in One God
    • both believe Jesus was born to the virgin Mary in a miraculous birth
    • both advocate the giving of charity, taking care of the oppressed and orphans and denouncing evil

Primary differences are: The trinity (Muslims believe God does not beget human children. Jesus was an esteemed man/Prophet,) Jesus' dying on the cross (Muslims believe God took him and an imposter was in his place), Jesus dying to erase the sins of mankind, praying only to God is in Islam- not to God's creation (virgin Mary, the angels, Jesus- a prophet/man of God.)

Actually Islam has more in common with Judaism...

... as both are still stuck in the 'eye for an eye' Old Testament stage...

... since neither believe Jesus is the Son of God and Messiah.

This is a stretch- what you are saying.

Eye for an eye. Islam forbids violence and the taking of life unless it is in self defense. It promotes justice indeed- but actually and constantly in Qur'an states that having mercy is always a better choice. (ie- someone killed a member of your family and you can go to court and put them in jail for life or plead for their leniency.)

Islam believes that Jesus had a miraculous birth, was a messenger of God and brought God's word through the gospel. Those messages were changed by man- so it's not certain which were his and which were changed. But it doesn't change the elevation in station that Jesus has along with all of the prophets and that he is revered in Islam.

Judaism does not see Jesus as a prophet- simply a man or "magician" that was essentially meaningless / no credibility.

Islam/Mohammed has simply taken the OT and adapted it to fit what it/he wants/wanted. If Mohammed had tried to print his Qu'ran today he would have been sued out of existence for plagiarism.

If Mohammed had truly believed in the Gospel, there would have been no reason for a Q'ran.

Those messages were changed by man- so it's not certain which were his and which were changed.

    The Gospel is pretty plain.

But it doesn't change the elevation in station that Jesus has along with all of the prophets and that he is revered in Islam.

Revered more than Mohammed? Being the Savior, Jesus is/was more than a prophet. That is the sticking point for both Jews and Muslims.

Trayvor wrote: Islam/Mohammed has simply taken the OT and adapted it to fit what it/he wants/wanted. If Mohammed had tried to print his Qu'ran today he would have been sued out of existence for plagiarism.

Point well taken. According to the PBS series on Islam, the intent of Mohammed was to bring the polytheistic Arabs into a common code of conduct and belief system so as to mediate warring factions and bring them together for mutual defense and economic interests. Establishing a 'new' religion was not his immediate intent.

sure there is/was. Jesus didnt finish the works. mankind still did not comprehend 'god' (nature), nor itself.

It is why jesus kept telling them, another is coming.

Quran has more prophecy in it than many admit
Much of it, is a circle jerk of plagerism, in itself. For example read Luke 1.... is john the special birth or jesus?
Jesus was a teacher and most any good teacher will share items that people are not familiar with. For example, Jesus shared that each can 'forgive'. ie... turn da utter cheek means that each of us can actually choose not to react to an adverse action caused to us. For example, if you car is broken into today do you lock it tomorrow?

Jesus was not the last word, nor was muhammad (quran).. Neither wrote a dam thing
Quran combines the eastern with western belief systems (confucius, hindu, zoroaster, judaism, christianity, etc)

ie... he learned from gabby people (not a gabriel angel), over almost 3 decades as he could not read or write (per quran, illiterate). He used his wealth to learn and an embodiment of literature was created by his circle of confidants; muhammad did not see quran during his lifetime.

But note that within quran, there is that challenge, that if anyone can write anything better, quran suggests doing so.

Think of the chain as evolving over time. Then ask yourself, if you think our generation can do better.

ie... 'we' as people can now learn and understand more than all of 'them' bodies of literature combined

Islam is actually Christianity on steroids but with the violence that is absent from Christianity. In that regard Islam is more like Judaism.
Of course there are countless differences between them which is why they are separate religions.

None of them worship the same deity.

Judaism worships an ethnocentric deity that favors the Jews to the exclusion of everyone else.

Christianity worships a Jewish zombie as its deity.

Islam worships an Arab moon deity that has some characteristics in common with the Jewish deity.

Then there's the issue of prayer. All three believe that the person praying should bow his head to keep the deity from snatching his eyeballs out of his head if he dares to look up.

I think the Jews pray three times a day. The muslims upped it to five times a day. Christians pray when they want a favor. None of the deities answer prayers. If anyone ever gets what he prays for its because of the normal probability of certain events happening.

The Jews used to practice animal sacrifices until Jesus came along. Although they don't believe in Jesus they saw that they could save money if they didn't have to buy animals for sacrifices so they stopped doing it.

Muslims still perform periodic animal sacrifices and give the meat to the poor.

Jews and muslims refrain from eating certain foods. A muslim will eat a camel but a Jew won't.

Christians like dogs but a muslim won't allow a dog in his house because angels won't enter a house if a dog is in it.

Christians and muslims believe in ghosts, angels, demons, spirits, zombies, resurrection, and eternal life and hell fire.

Christians think that they will go to heaven but the Bible says the final destination is the gaudy bejeweled golden cube called New Jerusalem.

Muslim men think that they will go to a garden paradise and kick back with 90 foot tall translucent virgins. The virgins will be the few muslim women who don't end up in hell since most of the people in hell will be women.

Muslims treat their women as Paul directed the Christians to treat theirs. Christian women now go to church in shorts and have no clue as to what a veil is. Plus they are always talking in church. Muslims pretty much follow Paul to the letter on that issue.

All three religions in their perfect form are bigoted and intolerant. There's nothing wrong with that for as Paul said, bad habits corrupt good company.

And if Jesus had truly believed in the Old Testament, there would have been no reason for a Bible.

And how did PBS come to this conclusion?

Well, what are you really gunning at? Everybody knows similarities exist, everybody knows that differences exist. They are so many that trying to list them will invariably be either completely uninformative or more describing of the selection bias of the poster than the actual differences.

In my opinion....Islam and Christianity, along with the other primary Religions are based on a premise.

To accept any of them requires one to ignore the reality current understanding has provided, and thus expects a level of ignorance or purposeful denial.\

This is an acceptable situation as long as those following the path understand those who do not accept the premise will understandably counter it with defined truth....and consider the perceived truth to be false.

    You are correct.
One problem that Christians have with Islam, is that Islam says, just as you say here, that Jesus was an esteemed man, a prophet, a man of G-d. Yet Jesus himself said many times very specifically, that he was in fact G-d.

Jesus said very specifically that he was to be killed, and that he would rise again from the dead. This is exactly what happened. Further, the old testament prophets years before Jesus ever lived, also said that someone would come, a messiah, and he would die for his people. Again, this is exactly what happened.

So my question is, can someone who lied constantly, really be an esteemed prophet of G-d? Because you claim that he didn't die, and that he was not G-d. That would make Jesus the biggest liar in all of human history. Yet you know of all the miracles he did. Even Islam accepts that Jesus did miraculous things. Can someone who lied throughout his entire life, really have done such amazing things, and be proclaimed as an esteemed prophet?

Even the Jews who put Jesus to death, never once denied that Jesus did such amazing things.

Jesus was G-d in human form. How does that work? I do not know. I can accept there are things about G-d that I can not understand.

The Pharisee Jews thought that Jesus was possessed by the devil. The Sadducee Jews just thought that he was crazy.

    The Jews didn't kill Jesus.

    Roman soldiers did

Blaiming the Jews collectively for the death of Jesus is dishonest.

I would agree. We all know they come from the same roots and we all know they've evolved into very different religions. I don't think the similarities are similar enough to allow both to live as equals in one society.

Absolutely right that both have these things in in common, while I wish the Christians were able to say their behavior was as scripturally correct as that of the muslims.

Christians would do well to forget the theology of the Talk and concentrate on copying the Walk of the muslim people who oppose Homosexuality , nakedness of the harlots' dress code, abortions, pre-marital sex, etc.
This nation is falling apart because of the expense of Welfare to single mothers whose kids are responsible for 70% of all violent crime and the fear people have to walk down the streets in America.
Drugs are opposed by the muslim community and even alcohol.

If Christians were honest with themselves, they would embrace the muslim community as the enemy of their own enemy, promiscuity and loose morals.

Theologically, they would also have opportunity to explain to muslims that Jesus was NOT son-of-God, Christ was.
The Christ left Jesus during the Transfiguration, but he was still there with Moses so he could raise the dead Jesus in tomb.
Clearly, Jesus could not be god, because god's are immortal by definition, hence they could never have been killed by crucifixion.

The Trinity confuses muslims, too, because they never got the story right from the Christians who were proselytizing Arabia.
Mohammed would have understood them better if they had explained that Christ was a mental entity, not physical.
Christ was the personification if Truth which is the ideal that can save men, and can never die whether people are crucified for telling that Truth.

    No.
When Jesus the son of a man was baptized, he was transfigured into t he spirit of Elijah who was the son of god that had gone up into heaven 800 years before.

Only Elijah could have come down.

    Mat 3:16
And Jesus, (the son of man), when he was baptized, (i.e.; held under by John until a Near Death was experienced), went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens (of the mind) were opened unto him, (in this ritual of Plerosis), and he saw the Spirit of God, (inside his Unconscious mind, i.e.; Truth, opening the door of past memories), descending, (as a great light rushing down through a tunnel reaching up to heaven above).

    Mat 3:17
And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This, (now), is my, beloved Son, (the immortal Elijah, the ONLY son, born again and begotten son), in whom I am well pleased.

Jesus never said who he actually was, but from what happened he was the "Suffering Messiah" the Jews traditional said would come AFTER Elijah had returned.
Once Elijah left the body of Jesus and returned to Moses at the second Transfiguration Jesus became the Suffering Messiah.
