There's still a lot that isnt known about these crimes. After 20 years, no matter what adminstration is in office they all refuse repeated requests for their declassification. NOONE believes their claim that declassifying these documents would jeapordize national security in any way. Furthermore, many of the documents that have been declassified are blacked out and many others no longer exist. Some have even be reclassified.

The Spanish judge who issued indictments and arrest warrants for 20 high ranking El Salvadoran officials for alleged war crimes requested that these documents be declassified but they were denied access.

In his report, Judge Velasco writes:

It's been almost 20 years so this reasoning is mere black comedy. The documents that are available are bad enough and what was already in the public record in press reports are often just as embarressing for the USG, so one can come to the logical conclusion as to why they continue to keep much of the records of their actions during this bloodbath a secret.

It just so happens they are disappearing at a time when a Spanish judge issues arrest warrants for 20 high ranking Salvadoran killers.
