I once saw a VERY interesting but highly mathematical research paper stating that preferrential voting was mathematically the same as the voting rounds. If you had a preferrential system it would do away with the expesive rounds of state voting.

However you would need to limit those on the ballot - maybe a run-off at state level to see who should go on the ballot and then a long ballot like our senate, You have a choice with the senate - either go through a long list of names ranking all of them (can be fun because I start with those I dislike most and work back) or you tick the party boxes at the top.

We are free not to vote - and the government is free to fine us for it

Honestly the fine is not too bad - have had to pay it because I was on nights and slept through it :p

This is why you should consider preferrential voting

You can rank the candidates however you like.

In the good old days politicians promised a chicken in every pot and a car in every garage. Now they're down to trading snacks for votes.

That is why the American working man voted for Trump.

Yes, lets make people uninterested in learning about government, the world, and how it all works, vote on how it should work. Sounds like a great idea!

    I used to think so

But it has advantages - I listed them earlier

Main one is a very fickle electorate who are not wedded to either side and will swing by massive amounts if you piss them off

What pisses off an Aussie voter?

    A) attacking our free health care
    B) attacking penalty rates and other worker rights (Shorten will probably win the next election)
    C) massive government restructuring (Newman lost by a landslide in QLD after being elected by a landslide because of this)
    D) picking the wrong leader

Unfortunately there have been elections lost because the electorate just could not stomach the leader of the party

The obligation one has to society is to make educated decisions that benefit society. The obligation isnt in the actual vote but in the process of voting.

    MAAAATE!!

If you think anyone anywhere has total freedom you are living in a pipe dream!!

Can you jaywalk? Can you litter the streets? Can you indulge in hate speech?

Can you swear at a cop?

Do a Donald and "grab *****" without a sexual assault charge? (Well you cant here - not sure now about America)

None since no exit polls were taken asking if they hated Trump or not. That was easy! :)

I really don't see how that would make a difference. 90% of the folks out there will know only two names, The Republican and the Democrat. Everyone else they would be asking "Who?"

Current, like in lighting up the electric chair, I could vote for that. Senators, don't care unless I need their name to fill in a John Doe slot on a lawsuit. Those oppressed idiots were fighting with their owners, still are. As to math, depends on the system.

And here I was under the impression that all the idiots lined up before the ballot box to make sure their benefits continued. And by that same contention, I am of the opinion that voters are the uninformed and ignorant, silly me.

    And I answered them all.

This is the most absurd claim that I have heard in quite some time and that is pretty tall considering today's world.

Quoting the very fake news media, Crap News Network, as some sort of authority on anything is pathetic.

I'm afraid you are way off base here my man. Fraud is the name of the game and division of the masses the means.

Actually not, perhaps a study of history will show that the context to which you try to imply is not at all true.

Perhaps switching over to a democracy would be more beneficial.

Freedom from government but don't forget to pay the extortion.
