People continue to be really, really stupid when it comes to using social media. This high school English teacher is about to get fired for her racist comments on Twitter. "DUNCANVILLE, Texas A Texas teacher who drew heat over a tweet has been placed on administrative leave without pay pending discharge, school officials say. On Sunday, the Duncanville Independent School District promised "swift action" regarding the tweet by teacher Vinita Hegwood, who landed in the middle of a social media firestorm. On Friday night, a Twitter account belonging to Hegwood tweeted the following: "Who the (expletive) made you dumb duck (expletive) crackers think I give a squat (expletive) about your opinions about my opinions RE: Ferguson? Kill yourselves." Hegwood, who is African American, teaches English, according to the Duncanville High School website." http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/...rsial-racial-tweet-teacher-ferguson/18792973/
But isn't it racist to fire her for racism? I mean she's black, female and invoked Ferugson, that should be a triple-whammy.
On the bright side she'll now have free time to head up to Fudgersonville and riot with the rest of her peers.
I'm not a big fan of firing anyone over Facebook comments. I think that's their own time and personal life that their employers shouldn't be able to fire anyone for. The only reason I might consider this is because of the "kill yourself" line.
First off....it was Twitter; not Facebook. Minor point, however. Employers monitor social media all the time....first in hiring, and then on a continuing basis in some cases....and certainly where they are in a position paid for by the citizens. This woman teaches teenagers....and taxpayers pay her salary. I hope she does get fired....as no one will want their kids in her class in the first place.
Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, all pretty much the same. Minor point as you said. That's also pretty much the main reason why I don't use my name or picture on Facebook. I have everything set to private for friends and family only. What I say isn't anyone else's business. I'm sure their are legitimate in class reasons to fire her if she's not doing her job right. However if she's the best damn teacher on campus(which I doubt)and still types this kind of stuff it's in her own personal time and her own personal page. The only people I think that need to be held accountable for the things they say on social media are elected officials.
