Of course they should. Caveat emptor. "Can" being the operative word here. You can not prove "actual damage," only guess, or wish, or imagine it to support your untenable position.

No, actually it would not: fallacy of false equivalency.

In order to deprive citizens of their civil liberties, you'll need conclusive proof that certain speech IS harmful, not "could be" or "can,' but "is."

    So I see.
Thus, his claim is unsupportable and therefore meaningless..

so what happens to Republicans who speak out against Trump?

Please stop blaming Democrats for native Republican behaviors. This would include voter fraud, election fraud, and silencing opponents.

    Several problems with this.

The law in Scotland was intended to close a loophole in hate speech laws: the law didn't apply to gatherings of hate groups if they took place in a private home. It was not intended to prevent people from having private conversations with their family. They may, or may not, word the law in a way that prohibits hate group gatherings without absurd legal consequences. I wish them luck.

The 1st Amendment guarantees that the government will not restrict your right to speak, but doesn't mean you can say whatever you want, wherever you want:

Constitutionally guaranteed "free speech" doesn't apply to hate speech.

A department store can legally stop you from giving a political speech in their store.

An online forum can (like this one) can stop you from making certain types of insults to other participants, as well as enforcing their view of what constitutes hate speech and prohibiting it.

I've heard general complaints about Twitter and Facebook, but I honestly don't understand what the issue is. So if that's where you're coming from, I'd like to hear some specifics.

Even Holocaust deniers should have the right to free speech.

That won’t be the worst thing. Once those laws are in place and people start posting less, then it will be what you DON’T say. “Why have you not commented on this or that? Comment on it in a way that pleases us or we will suspect you have a view we disagree with and you will need to be watched”.

Yeah, but Europe has a lot of nudism, as in totally nude family and friends nudist resorts with people of all ages. There may be a few resorts like that here, but most people here would never view anything involving naked kids and naked adults in the some environment as anything other than sexual. Even if those places are on alert for that, it has gotta be at least somewhat of a risk. Most Americans would not put up with it.

Not-to-mention there are porn sites that specialize in these nudist lifestyles. They operate in a legal grey area, where it is legal because the naked photos and videos do not constitute child porn since the nudity isn’t the focus of the content, but I think we all know what kind of people would go to those sites. It would not be real tried and true nudists. So that doesn’t help the perception either.

We could lighten up a bit. There has to be a nice compromise between freaking out over a woman breast feeding in public and having the entire school and their families playing naked volleyball.

Some Jews said that same thing to other Jews in Germany when they began noticing stuff also.

History repeats itself and I'm in triple trouble cause I'm white, conservative and Christian.

Hell, I will probably get my own drone assigned to me.

Think I will name it fluffy.

so you want to get rid of anonymity and force a site like this to censor every post before they put it online, so much for freedom of speech

when you make sites like this responsible for anything you post, trust me, you will be censored like you have never seen before

that said, dems will stop Trump and protect our freedom of speech

The first amendment doesn't apply to Facebook et al. They can censor whatever they want. Trump is trying to remove their government protection from the consequences of what they do. For government to support free speech in the private sector is noble and good. For it to protect the consequences of censorship is not. His methodology for eliminating section 230 is purely political. He learned that from Nancy Pelosi.

As to holding up the defense bill I can only say that we should be holding up all kinds of bills. Let's start bringing the troops home - all of them. We aren't even particularly good at trying to be the planetary police force.

Trump is trying to remove their protections from what their posters do.... when that happens these social sites will have no choice but to pre-censor every one of your posts like you have never seen before

yes, the two 10+ year Bush wars were bad for this Country, no doubt about that

but bringing most of the troops home days before Trump leaves office is a sick thing to do, puts the soldiers still there at risk, all in the hopes the Middle East goes out of control shortly after Biden takes office - really, Trump cares that little for our troops safety? he would risk their lives to try and make Biden look bad?

I don't see that honest examination and open discussion about historical events in any way harms civil institutions or public health. The truth doesn't need totalitarian censorship laws to protect it while lies can't survive without them.

Caveat emptor should be the rule in regard to disseminating false information about the Corona virus unless you want to totally eviscerate free speech.
