Cultural Marxism is a theory discovered by Italian theorist Antonio Gramsci after being thrown out of Russia by Stalin and locked up in Italy by Mussolini as a danger to the state. Gramsci was a critical theorist and former member of the Institute for Social Research, disguising its Marxist intent with the title ‘Frankfurt School.’

Many on the left today deny the ‘Frankfurt School’ even existed and it’s some kind of right wing conspiracy theory, which is the result of low information, and/or indoctrination. Yet here they are, along with a modern day memorial of his desk and chair in Frankfurt to Theodore Adorno, one of its founding members.

In his now infamous book ‘Prison Notebooks’, Gramsci found the answer to why the Soviet revolution didn’t spread across Europe.

He’s the one who discovered Marx got it wrong. It wasn’t about class, it was culture, hence the term Cultural Marxism. No more need for red flags and street barricades; remove the traditional culture on which society is built and you destroy that society.

Times they are a changin (Bob Dylan)

But if the workers weren’t interested, who would replace them? Out with the workers and meet your new revolutionaries, the minorities; the blacks, the dispossessed, the immigrants, the homosexuals, the feminists … Does that ring a bell today? When is the last time you saw a US protest with ‘Workers of the World Unite?’

Following the anarchy and chaos resulting in the collapse of society, Gramsci believed the State (today’s progressives) would step in using authoritarianism to clean up the mess.

After the war Gramsci was largely forgotten as Europe rebuilt, but in the 80s as the west turned conservative under Thatcher in Britain and Reagan in the US, the Marxists were once again forced to ponder the question of why the revolution wasn’t happening and Gramsci was rediscovered.

I believe in nothing and am tolerant of everything

Come the mid 90’s, enter the new European Union Cultural Marxists and a decade later in the US, Obama. Obama didn’t come to heal America, he came to introduce you to open borders, 150 genders, Black Power and European Cultural Marxism.

When current day gullible liberals shout Nazi, Fascist and bigot, this is what they’re asking you to regard as normal. This is all part of Cultural Marxism.

Where have all the indoctrinated gone? The ones who said Cultural Marxism doesn’t exist and it’s a conspiracy theory? Reality politics?

This is certainly change, but not “Change You Can Believe In” or “Build Back Better.” It’s the intentional dumbing down of society using Cultural Marxism and it’s not a coincidence that the same kind of thing is happening in Europe.

Which particular piece of work actually written by Karl Marx do people object to?
I wonder if ‘Marxism’ is actually a trigger word in the culture wars, but those using it have never read a word he wrote.
It’s a bit like people ‘ righteously’ objecting to officials decisions in a sport without ever having read the laws of the game.

marx was clearly referring to CLASS, which is a part, i suppose of culture?

    1. do those who oppose your interpretation of "cultural marxism" really think that life in a "traditional culture" ruled by a divine right hereditary monarch and bolstered by a sadistic inquisitorial religion is better than communism? really? there may be a class bias in that answer.

    2. what kind of "traditional culture" are you talking about? capitalism is a relatively recent development and by no means "traditional in western civilization, wherein divine right hereditary aristocrats are the "owners" of property.

    3. traditional cultures like those of the scotch highlanders, the subcontinental hindus, mayans, the cubans, the phillipinos etc etc etc are destroyed not by "cultural marxists" but by imperial capitalists backed by her majesty's tommies or us marines.

marx produced a huge body of work, in history economics sociology, and psychology. he was correct, for his time, more than he was wrong, and provided plenty of material for graduate philosophy majors, few of whom are evil revolutionaries. to consider any of it applicable to life in the 21st century is about equal to a belief in the literal truth of an impending "rapture."

Cultural Marxism isn’t strictly speaking Marxism. It’s the intentional tool used to destroy traditional society in the belief that the following authoritarianism to prevent complete anarchy will usher in a Marxist government that ordinarily very few would vote for. Its stablemate is political correctness (cancel culture) which prevents dissent or criticism using terms such as bigot, homophobe, racist, right-wing and fascist.

    1. It’s not my interpretation of Cultural Marxism. I didn’t invent it, I simply explain it.

    2. I’m not talking of capitalism, I’m talking about western culture.

    3. I’m not talking of Scotch (It’s Scottish. Scotch is a type of whisky), Highlanders, Hindu’s or Mayans. Cultural Marxism is a 20th century invention and has nothing to do with Imperialism.

    4. Marx was correct for his time, his era. Where his ideology was tried it failed, every time. That's because he was wrong about class.

funny you should bring up cancel culture. i was thinking about the great writers and actors on the "black list." and the smothers brothers, phil donahue, the dixie chicks et al who have been cancelled by our self appointed gatekeepers. big bird is next, for the unforgivable crime of teaching kids "play nice with others."

That is not what Gramsci says. It’s not just a cultural argument. It was that the Italian communist party failed to understand the needs of the rural south, thereby dooming the revolution in the north. The communists didn’t understand or even care to acknowledge the rural population and thus failed to understand the needs of the people living in the south. It’s about controlling a hegemonic discourse. In the context of the US the subaltern discourse would be ironically Marxism or BLM. Whereas the hegemonic discourse in the US would be neoliberal propaganda. AKA “the free market will set us free”.

I take it you've never read 'Prison Notebooks.' Gramsci wasn’t writing about Italy. He was answering Lenin’s question at the Second International posed to Marxist theorists as to why the revolution wasn’t spreading throughout the west. He found the answer and it has nothing to do with America. That the west including America adopted Gramsci’s cultural theory of identity politics is a consequence.

Hitler famously believed historys driving force was racial/ethnic, as well...and the russia revolution was stopped by poland when a revolutionary army (brigade) led by Stalin of all people was defeated in Poland in 1920, and there was always conflict within the revolution as to whether it should expand, or be just internal within the russian empire

Yeah, like in Italy where it failed and fascism took over.

I have the prisoners notebooks on my laptop and I studied subaltern neocolonialism which is the updated version of his ideology. Before you ask Spivak might say the subaltern can’t speak but I think they speak a language obfuscated by the hegemonic discourse and by understanding subaltern discourse we can have a basic translation between the two. Don’t speak to me what I have or have not read. You didn’t even mention what hegemonic discourse is or subaltern politics. You don’t know what you are talking about. All you are doing is reproducing the hegemonic discourse that Marxism is evil. How does it feel to be such a tool?

i'm glad you know what you're talking about. i take most of this theoretical philosophy from american conservatives with a grain of salt. they generally can not (or will not)tell the difference between liberal, progressive, socialist, communist, and the rest of their culture hysterics including "cultural marxism."

They’re idiots who have been bred to be idiots. I don’t particularly think highly of any conservative on this board. I don’t think any of them has read any political theory.

i take things a step further and blame the extreme right JBS of the 1950s for shifting ALL opinion so much that the "domino theory" became our established fact and got the US involved in a colonial/civil war (vietnam)...whenevr i even read the word "marxism" i stop reading and just disregard the posters train of thought

Meh. I think I came to terms with something as one of the few openly trans people on this board. It’s not worth engaging with cis people about trans people, especially event they have bigoted views that fly in the face of my own humanity. There is no benefit in talking to them. I’m better off with my own people.

Cultural Marxism wasn’t attempted in Italy, it’s where Gramsci was imprisoned.

What on earth is that mumbo jumbo post about? Did you get that from a sociological dictionary?

Yes actually. Sociology has been heavily inspired by the materialist language of Marxism. A lot of subaltern studies overlaps with sociology as it focuses on how subaltern populations live and are organized into society.

And yeah you're idiot who has no clue what they're talking about.

Oh totally but I have my community I talk to so it’s not lonely. It’s more tiresome having to hear the same basic tropes and nothing getting through.

I was referring to the language you used. Explanations as in the op are far more informative than using words like “tool” and “idiot” as a critique. I can spot you a mile off. :)

at least the tea party was not so purely a cult of personality as the trumpists, but i think many of the same adherents are now following trump.
