Yea, with some units ya have to use a fungicide periodically... ... can really mess up your respiratory system if ya don't... ... my guess is you live in a warm, moist area of the country.
You are right about the circuit boards, but the copper will only tarnish. Now the aluminum that the fins are made from will pit heavily from the bleach since it is caustic to aluminum. I am so glad I do not need AC. As for heating my wood stove does its job quite well.
You probably shouldn't be feckin' with black mold yourself. It's usually caused by condensation from your coil leaking all over your floor, meaning you coil is probably covered in mud (dust and water). The condensation isn't draining right. Get a guy out there with the right mask and tools who can take the coil out and clean it and snake the drain. Couple hundred bucks. Beats lung transplants.
Being a wee bit dramatic about it all. Very few people are going to have that level of exposure and it won't be from a window AC
Ever think of going to a doctor? Should have unplugged it or turned off the power, sprayed it down - including in the coils and so forth - with bleach a few times, let it dry out.COMPLETELY and then use it again. Washing it won't eliminate all the mold. A hair dryer could ruin the AC unit.
So you don't blow bleach all around your house... Some people are sensitive to bleach... There is probably a good chance the company that made that air conditioner was sued for not telling a family that cleaning an air conditioner with bleach is not a good idea when someone in the family has an alergy to bleach... Who the (*)(*)(*)(*) would clean an air conditioner with bleach anyway? Howard Hughes? Clean the outside casing all you like but not the inside. Perhaps that is another reason why they had to put a warning on the machine?
Gotta admit, I haven't known people who have had lung transplants due to black mold infections. I have known people who have had lobes removed due to other types of mold spores.
