“Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech,” the First Amendment states. But if it plays the angles just right, today’s Democratic Congress figures it can play a bank shot to get someone else to abridge the freedom of speech.

That’s what Thursday’s tech hearings were all about.

“Misinformation and hate speech” were the buzzwords Democrats used to describe facts and opinions Democrats do not like. For good measure, some threw in the old favor of censors, “shouting fire in a crowded theater.”

It’s very simple: Democrats hope to use the tech giants to censor the other side...
    ...
It’s not just Holocaust deniers and terrorists Democrats want to silence. It’s also pro-lifers, conservative commentators, and investigative reporters who have unearthed unflattering news about President Joe Biden.

It really doesn’t take guesswork to see what Democrats expect and hope the platforms will disallow. It was under pressure from Democrats that Facebook and Twitter banned former President Donald Trump, and then Amazon shut down the competitor Parler. Which Republican politician will be next?...

It’s really sad what the democrats are trying to do here. They are trying to use private company monopolies they have regulatory power over to censor others and to violate their first amendment rights on the democrats behalf. It’s an end run by government using business to do to its opposition what it could never legally do.

Didn't Republicans have regulatory powers over these companies until 2 1/2 months ago?

Republicans don’t act like dictators or over regulate. We have principles and total power over others is not part of our objectives for our exceptional nation.

Except for wanting to take away a woman’s choice or ban gay marriage.

Banning murder is kind of required. There is no ban on gay marriage. They can get married. It's about societal recognition of that marriage.

What's truly sad is seeing the same Republicans repeating ad nauseum the talking points fed to them from the right-wing hate machine.

If conservatives had their way they would ban gay marriage and take choice away from women. Cons have their things they want to dictate others to do.

There are authoritarians on both sides. I just think thes days they happen to be more on the left. The authoritarians on the right are being drowned out with newer freedom loving conservatives.
Also, the devaluation of free speech in our society is the prime avenue to the desolation of all our other freedoms and democracy as a whole.

Assuming your opponents are unintelligent and operating only on hate is the one certain way to assure that there is no civil dialogue in this country nor any unity or healing....

By employing these companies to do their work, the Democrats have deputized them, made them part of the Federal Government. As such, people who are censored should be able to sue them under the First Amendment. I'd like to see that play out as part of nullifying Section 230.

Is there something wrong with hating talking points? Try a rational argument. Problem solved. No hate.

What talking points are you referring to? Where is the right-wing hate machine you're referring to?

No but sometimes rational arguments are in the format of talking points. I am sure that's why the left uses them so often ;)

I don't care about the left. I'm talking about this thread.

    Talking points aren't arguments.

Now who is doing the hating? You made some blanket statement, seemingly generalizing across millions of people you don't know ,,, like when your predecessors in the Democrat cult held slaves, and you expect people to take your unsubstantiated assertions stand unchallenged. Muster some chutzpah, brass balls in the fishy world you seem to know something about.

It wasn’t a talking point. It is our position on the issue regardless what you think of it. My position is rational and you denying that means we have nothing else to say to each other on the issue. You progressives will respect us conservatives and the legitimate nature of our honestly reached opinions that are different than yours if there is to be dialog, healing, unity between our sides.
