When you have something heating up in the microwave oven for over one minute, do you wait in front of the microwave, counting down the last 10 or 20 seconds until it beeps or, do you just open the door and stop the countdown? The question for the ages.
I wait just one or two seconds after the microwave is off. That's all it takes for the microwaves to dissipate. It's electromagnetic energy, moving at the speed of light, it's not like that energy can keep bouncing around in there very long. The microwave vacuum cavity stops producing microwaves shortly after the power shuts off, almost immediately. I think though, if you open up the door really fast while it is on, some microwave energy will come out. Not the same level emitted when the microwave is normally on, but still some. What many people do not know is that some microwave energy leaks out of the screen door, so best not to be standing too close for too long while the microwave is on.
I try to open it right before the beep I wont eat anything out of the microwave until it's sat a couple minutes though .
Yes, I usually try to turn it off about 10 seconds before the alarm goes. Sometimes the alarm does go off, not a big problem.
Let me guess: when you turn off your flashlight, the light beam continues to bounce around the room. (???) Same concept. The microwave is off, there is nothing going on after that.
basically yes. Though the electronic circuit continues to produce microwaves for a short time after the power is no longer supplied (it's a resonant electronic circuit, the electric current bounces back and forth between the transformer and capacitor, going through the microwave generator).
Mine has a mute button. - - - Updated - - - If you run the timer out the magnitron stops operating before the light and fan shut off. However, even if you open the door in the cycle the microwave radiation dissipates in milliseconds. Far less time than it takes you to finish pushing the button.
the molecules are still moving fast, should wait a minute before taking the item out and eating drinking it - - - Updated - - - I have often wonder if a microwave detector would detect any leakage from a microwave (maybe from a defect), but never been concerned enough to buy one .
The molecules in the food are still moving fast because they're hot. That is what heat is. If you wait for them to slow down it will be cold again. Your microwave oven is a Faraday cage. If it leaks more than a mild magnetic field it is defective.
right, but have you ever tested yours, one would have no idea if ever became or was defective without testing I had heard you should always wait a min to eat anything, may be a ol wives tale like not using a cellphone at a gas pump or using a cell phone on a plane, ect... that people believed without any fact to supports it interesting simple test, unplug microwave, put cell, tablet or laptop in, see if you can ping it, if you can, it's leaking (big leak), other tests on page http://www.wikihow.com/Check-a-Microwave-for-Leaks .
. Being that these days I own/operate a small chain of appliance stores I have tested many of them. Then worst thing that could happen to you if it did would be some minor surface heating of the skin. Even if you ran it with the door open you would be hard pressed to hurt yourself with it unless you have a pacemaker or something. The only reason to let the food stand after heating is for hot spots to disperse.
(25 December 1998, Canada) Telephone relay company night watchman Edward Baker, 31, was killed early Christmas morning by excessive microwave radiation exposure. He was apparently attempting to keep warm next to a telecommunications feedhorn. Baker had been suspended on a safety violation once last year, according to Northern Manatoba Signal Relay spokesperson Tanya Cooke. She noted that Baker's earlier infraction was for defeating a safety shutoff switch and entering a restricted maintenance catwalk in order to stand in front of the microwave dish. He had told coworkers that it was the only way he could stay warm during his twelve-hour shift at the station, where winter temperatures often dip to forty below zero. Microwaves can heat water molecules within human tissue in the same way that they heat food in microwave ovens. For his Christmas shift, Baker reportedly brought a twelve pack of beer and a plastic lawn chair, which he positioned directly in line with the strongest microwave beam. Baker had not been told about a tenfold boost in microwave power planned that night to handle the anticipated increase in holiday long-distance calling traffic. Baker's body was discovered by the daytime watchman, John Burns, who was greeted by an odor he mistook for a Christmas roast he thought Baker must have prepared as a surprise. Burns also reported to NMSR company officials that Baker's unfinished beers had exploded. DISCLAIMER: This is an urban legend. But I though it would be fun to post.
Electricity "bounces"? Get one, they give water based recipes a unique flavor and make meats stay juicy while cooking. Most of the bad rep microwaves have are from people using them to reheat, which is not really their job.
I stop it before it beeps (the beeping is annoying to me for some reason), but then I also clear the timer.
