Doctor, guide rescue baby moose from Montana river

I'm not into Pets.

I like my animals in the wild where they were meant to be.

I thought this was a cool story.

MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) -- A Pennsylvania doctor on a guided fishing trip in southwestern Montana went home with an amazing tale of hauling in a 25-pound lunker a baby moose she helped rescue from a rushing river.

Karen Sciascia of Red Hill, Pa., and a guide were fishing the Big Hole River on Saturday when they spotted a cow moose with a calf trying to cross the waterway.

"We were watching this adult female struggling back and forth, and we didn't see a baby until we got close," Sciascia told the Missoulian (http://bit.ly/18RzCfb) for a story published Thursday. "Mom kept pushing the current was pretty swift. The mother bolted and took off across the river. She was trying to get across the main portion of the channel, and even she struggled."

When the calf stepped off the gravel bar into the water to follow its mother, it was swept downstream.

"It was small, and the river was swift," Sciascia said. "We lost sight of the baby. It was hurtling downstream and was being pushed by the river. It was too small to ever fight the current."

Sciascia and guide Seth McLean with Four Rivers Fishing Co. in Twin Bridges followed downriver, finally spotting the tiny moose's nose just above the water.

"We got up alongside it, and I just grabbed the little bugger. I scooped it up from the river under its front legs," Sciascia said.

Moose Die-Off Alarms Scientists; Climate Change Suggested as Reason for Drastic Decline in Numbers
October 15, 2013 | Moose are dying off at such a rate across North America that scientists are now expressing grave concerns over what the shocking death rate means.

Researchers have indicated that climate change and pests could be factors in the declining numbers of moose, but the moose population is decreasing so much that scientists are baffled as to why. Reports have pointed out that Minnesota was once home to two separate moose populations just two decades ago. However, one of those populations has now declined to just 100, and the second population is also currently decreasing at a rate of 25 percent per year. According to The New York Times, hunting permits in Montana dropped from 769 in 1995 to just 362 in 2012. However, despite the permits more than halving during that period, the moose die-offs are continuing at an alarming rate.

Nicolas DeCesare, a biologist with the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks who monitors moose numbers across part of the state, has said, "Something's changed." He added, "There's fewer moose out there, and hunters are working harder to find them." Climate change is one of the most highly cited culprits for the problem. Scientists have highlighted that winters now shorter than two decades ago across the regions with major moose populations and that could be having an affect. Longer fall and less snow in New Hampshire have also been said to have increased the population of winter ticks, which could also be having an influence on the moose populations.

Other reports have pointed to heat exhaustion as a factor, as the moose populations have to use more energy to stay cool once temperatures rise up above 23 degrees Fahrenheit. Wolves and unplanned hunting have also been suggested as factors, but it is unclear how they could have influenced such a widespread and drastic drop in the moose populations.

I'm not a hunter but is it okay to fart or pass gas while hunting?

I know the human scent can sometimes betray a hunter on a stalk. But if the hunter douses himself with scent eliminator would an unavoidable brrrrrap and the accompanying smell alert wild game to your presence and ruin your hunt?

May 07, 2014 ) It's that time of year in Vermont when parturient cow moose make their yearlings leave home, and the young animals wander out of the wilderness and into populated areas.

Authorities generally try to coax the creatures away from people and cars, back into the woods; recently, in the course of tracking one moose out of downtown Burlington, police hit a drug-war jackpot, coming across a shed containing 32 marijuana plants. "Moose do crazy things," observed Col. Dave LeCours, chief warden of the state Fish and Wildlife Department, speaking to New England Cable News. Like narc on citizens cultivating cannabis in the privacy of their own property, apparently. Vermont has a reputation as a left-wing sort of state; could its wildlife secretly be made up of law-and-order types?

The cops got a search warrant and arrested a 29-year-old for marijuana possession. This is the first moose-assisted drug bust the police can remember. According to a report by the American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland, Vermont had the fourth-fewest arrests for marijuana possession of any U.S. state in 2010, with a rate of 119 busts per 100,000 residents. Only Massachusetts, Hawaii, and Alabama came in lower. Last Wednesday, the Vermont legislature passed a bill expanding access to medical marijuana and calling for a study of the revenue-generating potential of legalizing the drug.

It's been suggested that a moose sighting is a sign of good luck, but Vermonters engaged in any illegal activity may want to be careful if they spot an errant elk; it could bring the heat in its wake.
