The problem is not the statues. I doubt that many people care about them. The problem is the anti-Americanism surrounding their destruction. The people organizing and managing this stuff is out to replace our culture and system of government. That, sir, is a problem.

This is incoherent. The left is doing exactly what the elites controlling want them to do. The people with the all of the real political and cultural power want the left to tear down the past to open a future where human rights do not exist, open borders are world wide and nation states do not exist. How in the hell can ordinary Americans believe this will turn out well for them?

You do realize these idiots taking down statues can't actually replace our system of govt, right? There is a reason why the founding fathers set up the govt the way they did.

These people are idiots. I remember how outraged I was when the Taliban were destroying 1000 year old statues of Buddha - as was CNN.

How would destroying Rushmore be any different.

Buddha was part of history - as were these US presidents. Destroying a statue does not change history.

Buddha was a figure that some groups find evil - such as the Taliban. This is not justification for destroying historical monuments. Every historical figure throughout history has done something that someone else didn't like ... so what - should we then try to destroy all history ?

    This is beyond stupid.

Our founders’ refusal to blindly follow their leader was what I was reflecting on this Fourth of July weekend, when some on the far right started attacking me for suggesting that all Americans should be heard, even those whose opinions differ from our own. Led by the Fox News host Tucker Carlson and egged on by President Trump, they began questioning my love for the country I went to war to protect, using words I never actually said and ascribing a position to me that I do not actually hold.

Mr. Carlson disingenuously claimed that because I expressed an openness to “a national dialogue” about our founders’ complex legacies, people like me “actually hate America.” One night later, he claimed that I called George Washington a traitor even though I had unambiguously answered no when asked whether anyone could justify saying that he was. Then he argued that changes to monuments of our founders “deserve a debate,” which, somehow, was different and more acceptable to him than the “national dialogue” that led him to question my patriotism just 24 hours earlier.

Not that accuracy matters to Trumpleton's. Tucky made an unsubstantiated allegation and that's good enough for them.
