Let's do the math:

For the sake of this discussion, let's make some totally fictitious assumptions.

1. He is convicted of crime X, in the USA and sentenced to two years in prison.

2. He is convicted of crime X, in Australia and sentenced to five years in prison.

3. USA crime X is equal to Australia crime X.

With those assumptions, and under my conditions, he would serve five years in an Australian prison.

Now, lets assume a US pardon. That removes assumption 1..

It looks, to me, like the same result. Hence my bafflement at your question.
