If you don't mind I'll take a shot. At its core economics a subject that evaluates the allocation of real resources and labor. When discussing the economy, I think economics can be broken into 2 main categories: 1) Economic accounting (the "math" of economics) 2) Political economic policy (The decisions made based on the interpretation of economic accounting). Now that was off the cuff, feel free to improve on it.
