There are, sadly, quite a few Ellen Barkins on this thread, and even more on this forum at large. Her opinions are far from isolated : more than 70% of Jews vote Democrat after all.

No idea what Ellen Barkin is getting on about. Always liked her back in her big movie success days, over 30 years ago.

I grew up close in place and year to her and learned very different lessons. I learned the same keys in a fist idea. My experience was that bad people came in any color and they looked just like anyone else.

 

Wanted to clarify the above. That Trump said he loves the uneducated is a lie of omission. Coincidentally happened across a video of it watching youtube tonight, remembered this thread, and what he actually said was:

Citing to that quote out of context is a lie of omission, just as bad as cutting off the beginning "they say" before "I could shoot someone..." Just as bad as saying "Trump made fun of a disabled reporter" based on a hand gesture he made -often- to describe frivolous, unhinged people. Utterly, thoroughly, disgustingly, knowingly dishonest, and it has gone on for two years, will likely continue for SIX more.

Never in U.S. history have the people been lied to so much ABOUT a politician and ABOUT that politician's alleged "lies." Thank goodness there is the net and easy to get videos to expose all the LW-Complex's many many lies about Donald Trump.

You have a point regarding the readiness of many on the left to normalize demonization of Christian straight white males. I see it a lot, including on this forum. Even though I'm rather on the left side of the political spectrum on social issues, the boiling, poisoned hatred for everything Christian, white, straight and conservative is pushing me further to the right. Hatred is not a good starting point for social justice in a healthy society.

I'm certainly not dismissing Barkin's tweet. She wanted to hurt the man deeply, that much is clear. I'm just dismissing the idea in the OP that Barkin is some kind of spokeswoman for Jews worldwide. Her tweet was the knee-jerk reaction of a very angry racist woman, not a statement made by a choir of all members of the Jewish nation.

Putting things into the proper context and perspective helps understanding the world around us. As opposed to knee-jerk reactions and hasty generalizations.

But yes, you're right, racism is a huge problem, whatever part of the political spectrum it's coming from. Unlike those who think being racist is a conscious choice, however, I blame nature - the human brain is wired in a way that favors generalizations. I think that in order to defeat racism it's vital to understand how the human brain works and find ways to go around some wiring problems. Discussions about racist tweets - knee-jerk or not - should concentrate more on the why, less on the how, who, and punishment.

I find the far left racism more repugnant than its far right counterpart, due to its use of human rights language to approve of and justify atrocities, providing that the perpetrators are not white. It's easier to deal with the outspoken racism of the far right. Both are self-destructing, because a society deeply divided along racial (or other kind of) lines can't function properly.
