Fox News and Dominion Voting Systems resolved the case, the Delaware judge overseeing the $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit said on Tuesday.

Fox agreed to pay $787.5 million to settle the lawsuit, Dominion attorney Justin Nelson said at a press conference outside the courthouse. The decision came after jurors had been selected but before opening arguments began.

The settlement averts at the last minute a trial in what had become a landmark defamation case. The judge had already ruled that that Fox News had published false statements about Dominion in the weeks and months after the 2020 election by repeatedly broadcasting bogus claims that the voting machine company played a role in nonexistent election fraud.

The trial would have focused on whether Fox News published those claims with actual malice and what Dominion’s damages were. In court filings, Dominion laid out evidence showing repeated instances of Fox News personnel casting doubt on the veracity of the claims about Dominion in private even as the right-wing news network continued to broadcast those claims, many of which were wild and unhinged on their face.

They had to, right? The idea that Tucker, et al, were going to have to take the stand and admit to knowingly lying................not to mention the ugly things they said about the rubes who tune in...........well......... Rupert couldn't let that happen.

We don't know if Faux will have to admit to their deceitful lies, the ones they told with the full understanding they were lies, or not.

To my current knowledge ATM, no conditions for allocution and there was some commentary that much more will come out/see daylight during the Smartmatic lawsuit with FOX Propaganda Network.

Neither side immediately released any other terms of the settlement beyond the $787.5 million payment to Dominion. It remains unclear whether Fox will have to acknowledge the false claims on air or issue an apology.

I would have paid $50 to see Hannity testify about why he felt it was appropriate to smear a legit company in the service of Dear Leader and the Big Lie.

That ought to give pause to the news stations that will run anything in support of Donald Trump, and perhaps give pause to those folks who take what Donald Trumps says as gospel. That's what FOX did and it cost them 700+ million dollars.

All told, they probably made more than that from advertising they ran during all the election fraud fantasy bits they broadcast, but either way that's no small amount.

Faux knew Trump was lying, Sidney Powell was lying, the pillow guy was lying, Rudy was lying.........and the talking heads kept inviting them back. Cuz they know how upset the audience would be with the truth. Fearing the audience's reaction to the truth being the thing that drives the business model of disinformation. After all, how do they stop now?

Maybe they'll able to take some inspiration from CNN(essentially the FOX News of the left) which from what I've read is trying to move back towards the center and recapture some essence of journalistic integrity under a new CEO. Honestly I hope both news outlets can develop a better relationship with the truth and less slanted political reporting, but I highly doubt that will happen. They cater to a need, and the need won't go away because the viewers will still be just as bitterly fighting culture wars as they are now.

Of course it was about making Faux pay for the financial damage done to Dominion and its reputation.

I would have thought that would be fairly obvious. Apparently it wasn’t so obvious to lemmiwinx

The salient question being, will Faux become a more factually accurate source of info for its audience? Obviously not.

I wonder why most of the resident forum righties are not chiming in on this news. Could it be that they didn't hear about the settlement on Fox "News"?

Guess what, if they did not settle, and went to trial instead, and they won and were awarded a settlement, it would still be about the money. That is the currency of defamation lawsuits.

Their lesson is to avoid outright lies, involving a marketed product or corporation. They can slant as much as they like, and they still can lie about public political figures.

I wish that were true, but it isn't. CNN and FOX are basically brother and sister.

If you can't see the cavernous difference between liberal bias and purposeful, outright lies I can't help you.

Right. Basically the go forward goal is to keep misinforming the audience without defaming a corporate entity based on lies they knew were lies. Probably the biggest change will be a severe curtailment, if not total elimination, of traceable, internal communications detailing the lies they will tell in the future.

I wouldn't expect someone who can't see the similarities to be able to tell me about the differences.

look who paid. as usual the entertainers at fox are pretending that their lies are just great fun for their viewers, many of whom are being held under gulag conditions (according to faux viewers) for believing faux lies.

That's cable news for you. Did you hear Don Lemon at CNN got suspended for sexual harassment and bullying recently? Yeah, well the media kind of ignored it didn't they?

Apparently not. You just said they suspended him. Has Fox suspended Hannity? Tucker?.... any of the liars that pushed Trump's Big Lie?

Yes but Lemon's deal was of a sexual nature. A Bill O'Reilly #MeToo kind of deal. And he still works there.
