It is a threat. There's no question that our economy will take a hit. The only question is: do we want mass graves or not?

"No groups" means crowded supermarkets, pushing, and panic buying.

Will hyperbole help people, or cause mass hysteria?

Keep Calm and tip a pint. :)

Is it hyperbole? We had mass graves in 1918. It's beyond question that the potential is there for similar mortality rates.

I would find it hard to believe that current medicine would not find means to stop the virus prior to taking the same percentage (aprox .19% of the population in 1920), and the same percentage in current day (todays population 329m would be 625,000 people).

Exactly what purpose does it serve to scream 'We're all gonna DIE!'

The Spanish flu had a high mortality rate over all age groups, from babies to the elderly and everyone in between. COVID-19 has not shown that same ability. Olders folks need greater protection, they have no business mingling with others unless under an isolated situation.

Highly unlikely, at least in the United States:

The Coronavirus Is No 1918 Pandemic
The differences between the global response to the Great Flu Pandemic and today’s COVID-19 outbreak could not be more striking.

And our medical knowledge and systems have come a long way in the past 102 years.

I don't think this will be anywhere near as bad as the so-called Spanish Flu (thank goodness).

I'm not saying its the same as the Spanish flu, but the potential is there for mass casualties.

Okay, let me see if I can rationalize it this way: Patient Zero is purported to be sometime in November/December right. So, 3/4 months in(give or take) with China stabilized, China itself hasn't reached 100,000.

Italy in its situation is at 24K. And we're at 4K. I think the upswing of the growth has already been seen. This idea of tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands and millions has not materialized.

Maybe. Maybe not. Still I'd rather say we over-reacted than didn't do everything we could.

In some countries. I don't think ours will be one of them.

You might find this interesting, if you haven't read it already:

Iran Has Far More Coronavirus Cases Than It Is Letting On
The surprising number of Iranian government officials succumbing to COVID-19 offers a hint that the disease is far more widespread than the official statistics indicate.

I suspect it's the same thing in China. I saw a video of a woman operating a crematorium in China who said her facility was cremating 100X more bodies than the government was reporting. I can't confirm her claim but I expect it's true.

That's what liberals want. Then they will come in to save the day with free money and reliance on the nanny state...

I'm not calling this a theory, but there is a question in the back of my mind. Is there a genetic component to COVID-19 similar to one found with HIV?

Iran and Italy appear to be hit harder by the virus than some other countries. Too many possibilities and too many unanswered questions right now.

My wife who has a front row seat in the Wall Street panic has been saying the same thing. The danger of going overboard is obviously real, and once fear starts feeding on fear it develops an irrational and destructive life of its own...

There's that, but they also demand draconian measures so they feel safer. I guess that's kinda the same thing.

In Italy's case demographics appear to be a major factor:

Here’s why the coronavirus death rate is so high in Italy
    March 12, 2020
    https://nypost.com/2020/03/12/heres-why-the-coronavirus-death-rate-is-so-high-in-italy/

As for Iran, it appears that they don't have the government and HC system to effectively combat a major epidemic. It would probably help if people stopped licking shrines, too... :puke:

Doing everything you can is different than inciting panic in the streets.

I don't hoard. I keep a week's supply of regular household items, plus a couple multipacks of assorted canned veggies on the rack in the basement. A few refillable gallons of water. Due to the hysteria and hoarders, I am being forced into buying multiple goods that I will need over the next couple of weeks, because as people panic and hoard, those of us with relatively level heads may not be able to refresh our basic stocks because the grocery stores won't be able to refresh their stocks.

Does that help clarify the problems that come from inciting hysteria and panic in the streets?

If the news were being objectively reported do you think there would be less hysteria? I don't. People are stupid. All it takes is a few to incite the dumb herd into a stampede.
