Former top Australian official calls for travel warning to U.S. due to gun violence

A former Australian politician says his country should warn citizens about traveling to the U.S. in the wake of the San Bernardino, Calif., shooting.

Tim Fischer, a former deputy prime minister who spearheaded Australia’s mandatory gun buyback program in 1996, said it is time to “call out” the U.S. on gun violence.

“Three hundred and fifty-two mass shootings in the U.S.A. so far this year, but about 80 a day you don’t hear about,” Fischer said in an interview with ABC News on Thursday.

"Have we not reached the stage where the Smart Traveler advice of the [Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade] needs to be muscled up?” he asked.

Does anyone agree with the former Australian MP? Has it gotten this bad?

Call me old fashioned, but I liked it when a hearing about shootings wasn't an everyday occurrance. Earlier today, there was a shootout in a Wisconsin motorcycle shop, leaving one dead. A few days ago were 3 injured and a death in a Savannah, GA shooting. Earlier that day, there were fourteen deaths in a San Bernardino shooting.

There's been an average of over one mass shooting per day for the past year. As gun sales continue to increase, so does gun prevalence.

US issued a travel warning after last years siege at a cafe in Sydney. They issued one for Canada after the attack on parliament hill last year. This is something they do often when minor attacks happen. They are petty like that. So yes Australia should issue a warning after every instance of mass gun violence.

I praise Tim Fischer for calling out the United States with its gun violence.

I do find this fascinating, we're at record lows nationally over the past few decades... however the perception is we're not...

and guess what, you can track a lot of that with the instant media now on many events... people sharing stories on facebook, news feeds going directly to cellphones, yet when its 4x less than it was a couple decades ago, we don't perceive ourselves to be any safer... I mean almost all crime stats are down nationwide... we've had a spike in larger cities with gun violence recently, but overall, we're FAR below the 90's even if we double our stats...

perception really does change things doesn't it... at least when compared to the facts...

just thought this was an interesting thing done by gallup...

And yet mass shootings are never out of the news despite the fall in gun-related violence. There is still something very broken in America, and the gun is at the heart of it.

Violent crime is decreasing in Australia too, and they have no mass shootings.

The 'one mass shooting a day' comes from a reddit participant website that counts new reports and does not use the recognized criteria for 'mass shootings'. They even admit that they cannot verify the reports. There are more shooting than that in a year in gun regulated Chicago and almost as many deaths.

Best advice for visitors, stay out of the hood.

    It is what it is.
Violent mass shootings happen, on average ones a day.
Cops having a bad reputation to be exceptionally violent for no real reason, especially vs minorities.

This isn't a problem in every police department but enough are that it makes the news, especially now that anyone can film what is going on, which is a good thing.

Yes. . it has gotten that bad, and the world has taken notice.

We spoke with my step son who lives in Colorado just this Wednesday, and we invited him to visit us in Belgium. His answer was: "I don't think that would be safe, not with the terrorists in Europe and especially in Belgium."

Well. . . France has had TWO mass shootings this year. . .Belgium has had none.

America has had more than One A DAY. . .that is about ( I lost the exact count!) 355 this year!

NO country in the world is as unsafe as the US. . .unless they are in the middle of the war, and more likely than not, the US is also involved in those wars!

Obviously, the US, with its "guns for everyone" fantasy world is going to feel the rejection of the rest of the world, and I bet that some Americans will be happy with that. . .because some do not have the intellectual ability to realize what isolation will do to this country!

By all means, pay attention to a reddit participant website that doesn't use the definition of mass shootings but makes one up. It appears to be a psychological issue if someone puts numbers to something, even if false, people think it is true. Best advice for anyone visiting the US, stay out of the hood.

Well. . . why don't you provide a FACTUAL LINK for the REAL number of mass shootings in the US this year. . .put your money where your mouth is, and if you know otherwise because of a reliable source. . .please provide it.

In the mean time, if you have NO factual information to deny the statistics, move on!

By the way, ONE good thing is happening. . .MORE STATISTICS are being collected on firearms homicides and the real damage caused by our gun addiction. . .IN SPITE Of the NRA lobbyists working very hard to keep those statistics from being collected and revealed to the people!

Here is an interesting one (with all details of how many wounded and how many death, including names of perpetrator as often as available and with the city in which these shootings occurred) that shows the REAL number of mass shooting this year. . .but it is not up to date!

Fantastic, anything that reduces the number of tourists, H1B job leeches, illegal aliens, etc., is a net positive. I wished more countries would adapt this approach.

How many cars have the arab muslims burned lately in the banlieues? Belgium was under a complete lockdown, has there every been such a situation in the US?

As for your ridiculous statement about "NO country in the world is as unsafe as the US", I am really tired of seeing effete, far left euros who have enjoyed 65 years of safety due to american military protection whining in any way about the US. After the arab muslims, they are the ungrateful wretched filth I can name on this planet.

When the euros decide to start spending the money their age 50-year old retirement pensions requires on their militaries to defend themselves, THEN I will accept the euros questioning the method by which the US provides that protection that allows you to sleep at night.

Sure. . .because tourism is not a big money maker in the US, right?
And because the US was not BUILT by immigrants!

Another person who wants to create an isolation from the rest of the world. . .and go back two hundred years. . . while the REST of the world move forward!

What a narrow minded comment you made!

If you don't go to places where Democrats predominate, like Gary, Detroit, Camden, Philly, Baltimore, East St. Louis, Birmingham, you'll do just fine.

When was Belgium ever in a complete lock down?

You hears about Brussels being at the highest level of terrorist warning (level 4), and STILL it wasn't lock down. . .and Brussels is NOT the whole of Belgium!

By the way. . .guess where I am going Christmas shopping this coming Tuesday, with two of my oldest friends? BRUSSELS! Want to see a picture of the "lockdown" in Belgium? Taken by ME!

Yes, europe is REALLY moving forward accepting millions upon millions of arab muslims; that's REALLY worked out well for france and belgium

How many shootings/attacks on jews by your beloved imported arab muslims have we seen in france/belgium over the past few years by your new arab muslim pets?

How many more shootings/attacks on jews are we going to see?

    - - - Updated - - -

Good job ignoring the bulk of my post, and that lockdown never occured in the US. Euros owe the US their very lives, and don't think that is not the case - without the US you'd be a russian vassal state right now.

    You know nothing about Europe.

And. . .there has been a LOT LESS attacks on Jewish people in Europe over the last year than attacks on Black people in the US!
I condemn EVERY attack on EVERYONE. . .I do not believe in violence for ANY reason.

But I certainly feel SAFER in Belgium than I do in the US! Or I wouldn't be here!

The majority of attacks on black people in the US are from other black people.

Looks like Europe is going back to it's bad old ways.

Attacks on Jews rise to five-year high in Germany - more than any country in Europe

Attacks On France's Jews Surge Amid Concerns Of Rising Anti-Semitism in Europe

And what attacks on Blacks are we talking about, especially since African Americans totally dominate interracial crime?
