I think a big reason for the ratings dive is because it came out that their whole image is phony. I think everyone has seen the picture by now of the Robertson boys clean shaved playing golf in yuppie shorts. Enough to make a person vomit. Perhaps the rednecks who thought they were watching "folks like us" were offended and didn't like being condescended to. Then there was the religious aspect of Phil R. preaching hatred. Jesus called people like him "hypocrites" according to Matthew.
I haven't seen the pics but I always wondered why you wouldn't clean up and start dressing better if you came into a lot of money. They are simply experiencing what every reality show since Survivor has experienced. How long can you continue to watch the antics of hill billies in clearly contrived scenarios? I would say that Phil Robertson's remarks did in fact hurt them. Contrary to what liberals on this forum believe conservatives are not jumping and cheering for morons like Robertson. His "marry them when they are 15" remark didn't engender him to anyone either.
