The government shouldn't be involved in marriage insofar as it should not be a special body of law as it is today, correct. But if it IS going to be involved, it must do so in accordance with the Constitution which guarantees every citizen equal protection of the laws. All of those "benefits" you list above could easily be conveyed through simple civil contracts among consenting adults.
