Don't worry. Once the money's gone the government will take care of you. That's what SSI is for. And if you're low income you get Medicare with similar benefits of Medicaid which means you don't have to pay for your medical bills or your Medicare coverage.

Oh, and if you elect Democrats the government will help you out even more.

Just don't expect your kids to inherit anything. If you're over age 55 the government is going to steal your estate when you die!

I think you have your sums wrong the average wage in 1950 was $63.50 a week, let alone the minimum wage.
So that's 3.5 weeks average wage.
In todays money that's about $4,600

All I know is... in the 1950s/60s... my father only had an 8th grade education, was a carpenter [and worked his way up to be the owner's rep on large commercial projects], my mother was a housewife... yet they owned a small farm in the country and a nice house in the city and raised three kids in a middle-class lifestyle [my brother became a NASA scientist] all on my father's one income. And my father was able to retire comfortably at age 62,

I'm sure that's not all you know :)
However what you demonstrate here is how things change. Housing/land more expensive, white goods cheaper.

Mobile phones were out of most peoples reach in the 1950's.:D

Amazingly... in the 50s/60s my family took many week long road trip/camping vacations mostly in the western US. My parents fearlessly drove us to visit all the National Parks... drove across the desert southwest to California [we have a photo of our 1955 Chevy driving halfway through that famous giant red wood tree]... drove through Zion National Park, drove up Pikes Peak, through the Rocky Mountains, Grand Tetons, Yellowstone and many more remote and interesting places... without a mobile phone. Today people are scared to drive down the street to Walmart without a mobile phone.

The world changes. People don't carry a mobile through fear, its convenience.
But also because the world changes so rescue services will assume mobiles are part of the equation.

My wife and I are from the UK we have been to Yosemite, beautiful place.
We were supposed to be coming to the states again last year, but Covid got in the way. Any recommendations for next year?

My family [ British pioneer stock ;) ] enjoyed traveling remote places and camping in the wilderness [which may not be your thing] and many things have changed since we first explored North America. Back then lots of Americans loved to camp out and most National Parks would have common camping/picnic areas that held nightly "camp fire meetings" where park rangers would tell the camping tourists all about the National Park, its history and interesting features. Personally, I enjoyed Yellowstone [Wyoming] and Zion National Park [Utah] best. But you should also see the awesome Grand Canyon [Arizona] I also liked touring Carlsbad Caverns [New Mexico] and Niagara Falls [partly in New York state and partly in Canada.]

One summer my parents and I visited Southern Confederate battle sites and memorials. On the way back to Texas, we discovered a place in Tennessee called "Lost Sea"... it was a cavern with a small underground lake. Tourists would walk down inside the cavern then get into a boat to tour the underground "sea".

I bought my current house... 2200 sq ft / brick / 4 bedrooms / 2 1/2 baths in a nice older established neighborhood [lots of tall trees here] in a Dallas suburban area... in 2001 for $135,000. Now houses in my neighborhood are selling for more than twice that amount... but still affordable compared to other growing US urban areas [lots of job opportunities in Dallas area.]

Pensions were common for that age group. You can have no money saved but have a good pension to survive on. Did they take that into consideration or did they ignore that so they could fear monger?

Anyways, they can fix social security it by raising the retirement age to 80. They can reserve age 60 retirement for people with serious medical conditions like dementia or physical restrictions.

For those who don't know Dave Ramsey... he's a radio/podcast personal finance personality who advocates staying out of debt [or seriously/quickly getting out of debt if you already have debt], creating a budget and staying on it, then investing for the long term and saving up money for a good down payment on your first house [which you would normally buy after you are in a stable career and married.] Per Ramsey, the stats for self-made millionaires say this basic formula is how most average people become millionaires [smart, slow and steady.]
