The American version of Mother's Day has been criticized for having become too commercialized.[9][10] Jarvis herself, who began the celebration as a liturgical observance, regretted this commercialism and expressed that this was never her intention.[1][11] In response, Constance Adelaide Smith successfully advocated for Mothering Sunday as a commemoration of a broader definition of motherhood in many other parts of the English-speaking world.

The history of Mother's Day starts with Mothering Sunday
The idea of celebrating mothers goes back a long, long way. In Greek and Roman times, festivals were held in honour of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. However, the precedent for modern-day Mother’s Day comes from the early Christian festival called “Mothering Sunday.”

Mothering Sunday was once a major tradition in the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe, falling on the fourth Sunday of Lent. It was seen as a time when the faithful would return to their “mother church”, or the main church in the area, for a special service. Over time, the Mothering Sunday holiday became a more secular holiday, where children would gift their mothers flowers or other tokens of appreciation.

Mother’s Day gained more popularity in the 1930s and 1940s after it was merged with the American Mother’s Day.

Mother's Day in America
A different kind of Mother's Day was first conceived of in the USA in the early 20th century. After the death of her mother, a woman named Anna Jarvis pushed for the creation of a Mother's Day to honour mothers and the sacrifices they make for their children. Following a successful campaign, in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure which officially established the second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day: a day for children to honour their mothers.

All American holidays are overcommercialized.

I doubt anyone has a problem with mother's day.

Anna Jarvis got Mothers' Day started in 1908. By 1914, her campaign to make it an official holiday in the U.S. had succeeded, but the apostrophe moved back one letter.

A few years later, Jarvis's campaign against the commercialization of Mother's Day was in full swing. In 1922, she supported a boycott of florists, whom she accused of raising carnation prices in early May. The carnation was her mother's favourite flower and Jarvis had made it a symbol of Mother's Day.

In later years, her campaign against the "racketeers" of her dear Mother's Day would get her arrested for disorderly conduct when she disrupted the American War Mothers convention because the group used Mother's Day for fundraising, and sold carnations.

When something is commercialized....that means it's important to the citizens. Wish President's Day was commercialized. Might understand the meaning.

Women (usually) go through hours of pain, have certain body parts stretched beyond tolerance, and that's before AND after giving birth.

While over-commercialized, Moms deserve recognition. Most don't care if you just show up or call, as long as you are smiling.

True, but I think its possible (and common) for something to be commercialized as a means to make it more important. That's how the psychology of advertizing tend to work, anyway.
