I'm Aristophanes. Well, maybe not, I'm not 'that' old. I am however a working-class conservative American with traditional values. I'm also a bit of a deep-thinker.... for a username I tried Socrates, Aristotle and even Plato. All were taken. So - I went with Aristophanes ..... I found some similarities with my character when google him. See this link if it interest you for educational purposes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aristophanes and some insight to my fun-loving and joking nature.
Welcome, thanks for the article about your namesake. I suspect that he might have been the equivalent of William F Buckley jr in his day, that rare breed of exceptional wit and eloquence from a conservative perspective. I make no bones about WFBjr's writing inspiring my own even if we had little in common politically. There is no one remotely as astute as he was on the right today. It will be a welcome addition to have someone on the right who can think beyond the contentious noise streaming from the media these days.
Hello and welcome from Germany! I'm also conservative in many ways, but not always. Some of my views are considered leftist in my country. Especially my views on migration. Many conservatives in Germany are xenophobic. I think that's not the case in the US. BTW, I have relatives in the USA, in Rhode Island, whom I visited some years ago.
My great grandparents moved here directly from Germany. My mom’s father’s parents. Others on that side of family are in Austria, been awhile since any lived in Germany.
I've heard that German-Americans are the largest ancestry group in the US. German almost became the American de-facto national language. Would be funny.
Welcome to PF, Aristophanes. Are you into comedy, as well as philosophy? You'll find an entire Sub forum devoted to Religion/Philosophy. Hope you enjoy the discussions you'll find there, as well as the other discussions throughout the PF Board. If you have any questions there's also a private forum "Feedback and Questions" devoted to that where the Mods will be happy to assist you. Enjoy yourself, most of all!
I’m actually not too into comedy. I do know how to laugh, though. Other’s get kick (in a good way) from me occasionally. I’m kinda known as a smartass, dry sense of humor it could be called. I’ve gotten the impression Aristophanes was kinda like that…. and welcomed at gatherings of great minds - just to see what he’d say. I work full time, have to take care of house and home, etc… I can’t spend too much time here. I’ve found my way around here fine and even read the rules… I’ve played it by ear (about rules - what’s acceptable or not) on two other sites and did alright. About Religious threads… I’ve been there as a Christian, I know how Atheists tend to be, umm….. *******s. I’ve backed Christians and agnostics, and gave Atheists hell when they were rude and disrespectful. It wasn’t pleasant, pretty sure I wouldn’t go there again.
A good sense of humor is something you need on discussion boards. Never take yourself or others seriously enough to get upset over. I'm glad you had the good sense to look over the rules of PF. They are meant to keep things running smoothly between participants. Being civil will promote more interesting conversations. Religious discussions are an example where it can trigger some rude responses. Abortion is also a hot button topic. But both of them are worthwhile discussing. Just remember to enjoy yourself and that how others get their kicks is beyond your control.
I was born with a good sense of humor. Posting on my first site developed a thick skin. No comment about the rules and how others follow them or not.
The rules…. they are well written and reasonable. That certainly had something to do with whether I joined or not.
I spent many years living in Germany... well... West Germany... back in the day. Loved the place. Loved the people. And the food!! Shweinehaxen!! (with a nice auslese!) My visits after reunification haven't been as pleasant. But I still think Germany is a great place!
There is a Pinned Post in the Religion forum WRT to how the rules are applied there. You might want to check that one out too before you choose to be disparaging of atheists. FTR no one should be rude or disrespectful of others irrespective of what they do or don't believe. That applies to EVERYONE in this forum.
I didn’t mean for that to be a blanket statement of all atheists, some are respectful of others and even good natured. I’ve somewhat recently gotten to know one (online) and we get along quite well. He is a bit of a pessimist, which might explain his religious views. I’m an optimist, or like to think - a realist…. anyway… our ‘characters’ kinda clash, but all is well - he is a pretty good egg. I could say more about my experiences in religious sections, but this is not the place. Perhaps in due time I’ll visit and post in that section, but it won’t be anytime soon.
Welcome to the PF - I hope you enjoy your time here. Aristophanes is a fine nick - he was a very smart and witty playwright. If you've never read any of his comedies I would recommend beginning with The Clouds. Cheers
