…McCarthy chose the bill's number, H.R. 5, because children enter kindergarten at age 5, and the legislation is built on five pillars: parents' right to examine curricula and school library books, meet with educators at least twice each school year, review school budgets and spending, be notified of violent events in their child’s school and have elementary and middle schools get their consent to change a child's gender designation, pronouns or name.

"It’s about every parent, mom and dad, but most importantly about the students in America,” McCarthy said at the introduction event.

The bill's supporters described it as common-sense legislation to foster opportunities for schoolchildren by encouraging parents to have greater input into what their children learn in school….

This is a great bill. It’s good that we got it passed in the House. This is a campaign promise kept. Thank you Speaker McCarthy for keeping your word on HR 5.

This is a great contrast with the democrat senate. It’s also good to see individual red states and local red counties enacting some, all, or even more in this regard across the country.

This is awesome! The House doing something that is already done all over the country! This is definitely not some sort of feel good legislation intended to appease folks who like to scream at school board hearings in the hopes of getting video of it on a Fox talk show!

So what is so great about this bill and what problem does it solve?

It distracts the low intellect from the real problems we face that the GOP does not address or from the fact that they do not even have a platform.

Exactly. Red meat for the MAGA, perpetually outraged over nonexistent problems base.

Republicans support whatever policy allows maximal discrimination and prejudice. For this issue, they like "parental rights" to help with that goal. For healthcare, it's the opposite.

This bill will hopefully make all the reds sleep better at night and not worry so much about the "woke" boogeyman that they can't define.
