An opinion piece, but something to note from the article. https://www.cnn.com/2018/04/24/opin...right-way-to-face-up-to-evil-cohen/index.html This is what heroes do. They don't shoot first to protect their own lives. They put their own lives on the line, that is a self-sacrifice, for the common good, that is to have a suspect in custody to question. Shooting this man would have been easy. And if this officer had, it would have been accepted by all of us. But he choose the harder route. Also worth noting the lack of xenophobic reactions. I'm sure there are some, but they appear to be not widespread and public. An example we could follow.
Yes, it is much braver to see if the guy pointing a gun at you will kill you before you shoot back. Send the Canadian police to Detroit or East St. Louis for a year and see how long they last.
It's an easy thing to say with 20/20 hindsight, but there was an officer murdered in Dallas this week. I don't see any "common good" when that happens.
AND he was "unarmed". At least until he pulled the gun out of one of the cops holsters and shot them in the face.
The interesting part of this guy's column is that HE assumes only Muslims are terrorists and that's why this incident wasn't terrorism. The left never sees their own inherent racism and bigotry. Oh, and the cop was foolish, he's not there to be shot at first. I'm sure his wife kicked his ass that night when he got home.
I have a wife and 5 kids depending on me, so I would not take that risk. Trusting evil to do the right thing worked out in this case. What are the odds?
And how is that different from what has happened to U.S. captured mass killers? Hmm, the Waffle house shooter--caught without killing him. The Parkland shooter--caught without killing him. The Aurora shooter--caught without killing him. Pretty much mass shooters have killed themselves. I can't recall one that has been killed by police (although I'm sure that has happened, it's just rare).
The lunatics didn't have a gun. It was a something else. Here in Canada, we don't have guns proliferation. So the police have more nerves when they make an arrest. They don't systematically fear for their life when they apprehend a suspect. I sincerely hope that you will never get shot by a cop who thinks you have a gun in your hands while it's your cell phone.
All I know about this is that an unarmed man was apparently arrested and defended himself with lethal force. If the arrest was illegitimate, good on him.
I don't walk around like an idiot looking into a phone screen so I won't have that problem. And yeah, Canada has plenty of guns. About 30 per 100 Canadians in fact that are lawfully owned. What they don't have, at least until recently, are the people who want to pick up guns and shoot people with them.
Some people do shoot at our police and I'm sure you'll be amazed to find that they do actually shoot back, usually to great effect. This officer had the benefit of specific training in situational assessment and de-escalation techniques as part of the force's annual continuous training program. When the dude pointed a cell phone at him and screamed "shoot me in the head", the officer assessed the guy was a nutbar looking for suicide by cop and he knew how to confront the dude. Cops like that last a long time and merit the community's respect.
No, actually there have been the occasional mass shooting for decades. We tend to view the perps as mentally ill regardless of political/religious/racial motivation claimed.
The vast majority of them (about 95%) are hunting rifles. Semi auto guns are very rare in Canada. The difference between our two countries is that it is much more difficult for a canadian lunatic to get the tools to kill people. While in US, he can buy them virtually anywhere.
95% of Canadian online gun stores disagree. https://www.firearmsoutletcanada.com/rifles/non-restricted/semi-automatic https://www.huntinggearguy.com/rifle-reviews/top-10-non-restricted-black-rifles-in-canada/ Taking a safety course and filling out some paperwork in Canada isn't what makes Canada have less murders. What makes Canada have less murders is not having as many murderers as the US. Mostly associated with the drug trade, as you're finding out in Toronto. http://www.torontopolice.on.ca/homicide/mostwanted.php You think any of the guys here took a safety course and filled out the paperwork to get a gun?
Well of course. Anyone who commits mass murder isn't right in the head. I'd disagree on the mental illness appellation to some degree though. People who are mentally ill are detached from the violence. They don't necessarily relate to the ramifications of what they are doing, they just act on their impulses. There is a different group of people though who are just evil. They revel in causing pain and suffering.
Well hopefully the people in Canada don't demand this guy gets released after a couple years, then goes and rents a bigger truck.
