How NATO leaders used quiet maneuvers and 'adroit flattery' to keep Trump from blowing up the allian

For starters without access to various bases in Europe (in the territory of our NATO allies) the U.S. would have to spend immensely more on sea and air life in order retain the same capability of mobile forces.

 

Capability to do what .. we have some 800 bases around the globe. .. What is it that we are doing that we couldn't do with say 30 strategically located bases ? and who are all these enemies we are fighting ?

Neocon's always love more Military spending .. for any reason .. no matter how stupid.

 

I'll give an example. The facilities and location of the huge Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany serves to support and service literally hundreds of other bases around Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Its assets cannot be easily replaced. And certainly not economically replaced.

 

Bases in Germany to do what .. who are we planing to fight in Germany ? and Europe in General.

 

Please don't act like you don't know what I'm talking about. Ramstein supports U.S. operations in Europe, Asia, Africa and a host of other areas.

When my parents neighbor down the road lost both legs to a grenade attack in Iraq he was evaced to Ramstein for a huge amount of his emergency care. As was one of my former students that lost his legs in an IED attack in Afghanistan.

Yep. Common sense. If NATO didn't exist, we'd have to replace it on our own and it would cost money, - LOTS of money.

 

You know full well - Americans are in Europe to prevent the expansion of
Imperial Russia. Without the Americans the Soviet Union would not have
stopped at Berlin, nor even the English Channel. The entire landmass of
Eurasia would be Communist.

 

Russia is not expanding into the EU .. and everyone knows it .. we will not see Russia invading France - any time soon - and if they do - there is nothing we will be able to do to help.

I answered more than once but you either can't read or deliberately ignored my reply. As for "who are we planning to fight in 'Europe in General'" have you missed all the news about the Russians massing thousands of troops on the border of Ukraine?

 

Trump and others see NATO as a 1950’s anachronism. Russia is Mexico with nukes, and you can threaten but can’t really use them. There is one threat to western Europe: Russia. (Two actually if you include cultural suicide)
Their are three threats to the US: China, Russia, and Iran.
We are in danger of serious economic ramifications with China putting us in their crosshairs.
NATO didn’t even care enough about NATO to pay their own dues, yet the US is expected to go war for them.

 

There are reasons going back to its foundation that European NATO members don't pay what they should for their own defense.

NATO was formed with the goal of preventing Soviet invasion and occupation. Thus many of they key NATO nations like West Germany, Norway, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, France, United Kingdom and probably Italy would suffer severe damage by direct attacks by the Soviets. Thus there was the belief that "we'll be the battlefield" which Europeans figured that they would suffer enough in the event of any war with the Soviets.

 

Europe is no longer threatened with Soviet tank divisions pouring through the Fulda Gap. We won, we can go home.

 

You don't change decades of mentality and thus policy within just a few years.

 

We are down from 400 000 troops to about 40 000, so its fair to say we went home.

 

I think 30 years, an entire generations' worth of time, is enough time to figure it out. We certainly didn't take 30 years to go from a hot war to a cold one, we figured it out pretty quickly.

 

The Soviets are gone but the Russians are still pretty threatening you know.

 

It is you that missed the memo .. 1) we will not be doing any fighting against Russia if it invades Ukraine .. and 2) Russia will not be invading France ... and if they do .. we will not be doing any fighting to defend France.

 

We won't be mobilizing any forces if Russia attacks France .. We will be too busy hiding in basements and bomb shelters.
