I came across these matriarchal societies among people of color:
1) Mosuo; they live near the border of Yunnan and Sichuan provinces. They are an ethnic minority of China.
2) Minangkabu; of Indonesia.
3)Akan; they live in Ghana.
4) Bribri; they live in the Limon province of Peru.
5) Garo; they live in the North-East state of Meghalaya in India.
6) Nagovisi; they are located in South Bougainville, an island west of New Guinea.
These are real societies, not myths.

 

Thanks. I will look into them. Do you know the standard of living and freedom of these women to pursue personal goals? Are they contributing advancements in fields of the sciences and arts? Wow. Some interesting cultures for sure.
1) Mosuo—
Actually more matrilineal as political power belongs to males. Women do almost all the work. The men do slaughter pigs and have a way to preserve them whole for ten years.

2) Mingangkabau—
Also matrilineal. In spite of being adherents to Sunni Islam. Religion and politics dominated by men. Some of the most educated and influential people of Indonesia.

3) Akan—
Also matrilineal. Male kings with co-ruling female “queen mothers”.

Big on slavery. Expanded it greatly with the help of Europeans. Up to one third of Akan populations at one time were slaves.

Apparently invented spider man.

4) Bribri—
Matrilineal clan structure. Believe the cacao tree was a woman turned into a tree by god. Agricultural people with a smaller subgroup being iguana farmers.

5) Garo—
Matrilineal. Men fierce warriors. Headhunters who’s status was equivalent to number of heads squired. Until the British massacred them in 1872. Property owned by women but men govern and manage.

6) Nagovisi—
Women grow the food. Sustenance agriculture. Matrilineal but share leadership with men. When couples quarrel the woman ends up in the dog house and usually has to gift a pig to the man to be reconciled.

As far as I can tell every one of these societies is basically sustenance agriculture based with women doing the majority of the work. Very interesting cultures though. I’m glad you found these. The iguana farmers especially intrigued me. That’s one species I’ve never considered...

Wow, we’ve come to somewhat the same conclusion. My point is our society everyone loves to hate is as good and arguably better than any other.

I sometimes like to point out when white men get blamed for things life with them isn’t all bad. Certainly not worse than the alternatives. Arguably better.

I love that you appreciate happiness isn’t based on “stuff” and absence of menial labor. I wish more felt that way. It would go a long ways solving problems like the subject of this thread.
