These threads aren't created to resolve political issues, the aim is just to discuss them, ideally (though unlikely) to agree on a solution. In the matter at hand, the accurate issue is how to respond to a large caravan of Central American poor migrants heading for the US border to claim asylum. Responses to this question vary along the basic lines I noted; conservatives say Trump must send the army, block these migrants with force if needed, keep them out; lefties demand the opposite, presume some international obligation to shelter these refugees on humanitarian grounds.

Intelligent discussion should consider both perspectives; are these migrants actually "refugees"? They don't appear to meet the criteria, but maybe if a credible case could be made their government is incapable of adequately providing for their safety from gang warfare? Then there's the issue of how many should be allowed in. The critical left appears to argue there's some sort of unlimited obligation to shelter everyone who objectively (or subjectively) qualifies as a refugee, but the US has a quota, a specified total number of refugees are allowed each year, presumably anyone applying for admission as a refugee beyond the annual quota would be properly denied admission.

Conservatives don't think these immigrants are refugees, we've heard them reject offers from Mexico to shelter them, give them jobs, provide healthcare and education for them, they've repeatedly stated their aim is to secure a better life in the US, these are impoverished peasants masquerading as refugees in pursuit of "the American Dream". We know the existing immigration system establishes anyone claiming asylum has to be scheduled for a hearing by an immigration judge and that these hearings are typically about two years later, that during those two years the applicant has to be temporarily allowed to remain and that barely 2% of those scheduled for asylum applications ever appear in court.

Then we've got the effect of all these immigrants, which should be considered when resolving what should be done. For those who highlight the immigrant origins of Americans, the diversity of the nation, and the contributions of such diverse people, the general idea is that immigration is always good and the more the merrier. Others believe quality over quantity would be a better guide and that too many low quality immigrants are being allowed, we'd prefer admitting better educated and more skilled professionals.

 

Thank God. Only President Trump can stop the Caravan!
