For those who don't know, an MMO is a massive multilayer online game, like World Of Warcraft.

I love seeing the worlds they create, and I really enjoy bashing monsters and taking the loot and seeing a reasonable story.

But one aspect that I absolutely hate the most is PVP.

PVP is player versus player. And I tend to hate it with a passion.

Because in PVP, I am constantly going up against another player who has maxed out their gear. And here I am, a low level, being attacked by a very powerful avatar, character, whatever you want to call it, who is just being an (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*).

In essence, it's like the difference between a twenty two pistol and going up against a person with a BAR and completely bullet proof clothing.

Or to put it another way, it's like riding a bicycle head on into a semi truck.

It's terribly unfair, especially when those people start ragging on how tough they are.

I don't understand why it's so all fired important to do this, but if I had my way this kind of thing would never be allowed.

Things should be on an even footing. That way there's an equal chance of winning for each play, modified by the strategy they use.

When a MMO has PVP that has no rewards for a loser, I will never do PVP under any circumstances. you just can not win against a huge mac truck.

It's very frustrating when rendered impotent and you wonder why bother playing in that at all?

But a game like DC Universe Online does have rewards for players who lose. it's just that the winning team gets more.

Still, it's frustrating when you have these people attacking you. It's even worse when there's two or more attacking you.

So, that's my statement on PVP.

I'm more of an FPS kind of guy. I used to play Star Trek Online because I love Star Trek and I thought it was cool to be able to ride around the galaxy and visit planets and stuff. I still get nerd goosebumps when leaving Earth and the space station tells me "This is Earth Space Dock departure control, you are cleared to Beta Quadrant, Godspeed Captain".

Im like oooo this is so cool lol

I stopped playing it though because there werent many people online and outside of hearing the cool space talk there wasn't much else there for me. I spent most of my time just flying to different planets so I could hear the orbital control station clear me to land because I thought it sounded so cool.

I've always hated MMOs for just this reason. Yes, there should be an aspect of improving your character through gameplay, but it should always be possible for a day one newbie to kill the highest level guy there is. This is possible in War of the Roses - a crossbow bolt to the head will kill even the highest level guy with the best equipment. This is possible in most fps games, like Heroes and Generals - again, a day one newbie can shoot the most experienced player and win.

haha, I liked that game. I liked the story play, but it eventually got repetitive and devoid of any flavor. I am still waiting for a quality open world Star Trek game. I'd pay a hundred dollars for such a game.

I have all seasons of Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager - on netflix. ;)

I was absolutely fascinated with Second Life until the sex workers took it over. I've been meaning to play that one on Tanks they keep pushing on TV, but I'm afraid there must be a bunch of malware they install on your computer. Anyone know if it's safe?

Generally, boards like this are the most vast Black Holes for time ever devised. I don't need any more obsessions.

There is a new book out on the Ten Commandments of the Klingons (not the title) Hilarious and profound.

Yeah, gear-based PvP games are stupid since everyone is on a different playing field. What you have to understand is that most of these players are losers who want a handicap. I used to play Guild Wars 2, awesome mmo-like game and the PvP has an option which isn't gear-based but is still a lot of fun. I'm too busy to play it these days but I do think it's the best game out there of its type.

Roddenberry was a visionary...socially and technologically; however another Gene associated with the Star Trek franchise is never talked about....Gene Coon.

Like Roddenberry who served on a B-17 crew during WW2...Gene Coon was also a WW2 veteran. Coon was a United States Marine Corps veteran who served during World War II, then joined the Marine Corps Reserves in 1948 before being called back into active duty in 1950 for service in Korea, serving from 1950 to 1952.

What did Gene Coon do in relation to Star Trek?

He served as producer for the original Star Trek in its first and second seasons, wrote eight of those episodes, and then wrote another four for the third season. Among his contributions to the franchise are the Klingons, the Federation, Starfleet Command and the Prime Directive. He also wrote the episodes with Gorn (the lizard man), Khan, those half-black/half-white aliens who taught us that space racism is bad (again) and the inventor of the warp drive. Basically, if there's something you remember from old Star Trek that's not Uhura's miniskirt or Kirk's dropkick, Coon did it.

If we had to compress all of what the Star Trek Universe is about ...what are the two most
    important features.

#1. Warp Drive. by Gene Coon
#2. The Prime Directive. by Gene Coon

The entire point of Star Trek was to explore space...warp drive made this conceivable and once out there in space exploring, a set of principles are needed....The Prime Directive. Kind of like the 10 Commandments, but set in outer space.

All of this emerged out of the mind of Gene Coon, not Gene Roddenberry.

anyway I'm way off-topic and sorry for that.

The only "game" I play anymore is a beta version of IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad WW2 flight simulator. The PC crowd appears to be more mature than the on-line console world.

I dislike MMOs such as WoW for their grindy, gear-oriented, BORING gameplay and their primitive, numbers-based, BORING combat systems.

Give me multiplayer Skyrim or give me nothing at all.

Thats why I cant wait for Star Citizen to come out. I want a space game to where I can walk around my own spaceship and land on all planets and walk around. When I saw walk around my spaceship I mean my whole spaceship not just small little parts. They promised to be able to do all of that and we will see. If they actually come through then I will upgrade my rig to play that game.

You gotta beware of promises from game devs, that's for sure. They'll promise you the entire solar systems, but then give you Destiny.

Yeah thats why I don't deal with consoles. Console games are limited by the weak hardware in a console so game devs can only do so much. Pure PC games are only pretty much limited by the devs imagination since PC's are so powerful. Now not everybody is out there running SLI Geforce Titans but even mid range PCs can do so much more than a PS4 or Xbone can do. What bogs down PC games are their console ports. Game devs have to make a game able to run on a console and make it a bit better to take advantage of PC hardware. But a game specifically designed for the PC has no such limitations.

Star Citizen can actually do what they are claiming they are doing. PCs have the hardware to run it. Now we just have to hope they actually do it like they did in the old days. Back in the day PC games were made for PC hardware that wasn't even out yet. Nowadays they are trying to make games that most people can run on launch. Star Citizen devs say they are bringing it back to the old days to where you will need some crazy rig to play the game on max with all of its content. I hope they mean it. I know that making a game designed for elite 1% PC's is a bad business practice, but I hope they say screw the money and finally show what a real gaming PC is actually capable of. If they deliver I will upgrade my rig. It's a community funded game anyway so they better not dumb it down for the casual PC gaming rig.

Commercial interests interfere with games on all platforms, though. We tend to get a lot of repetitive, "safe" titles that are designed to try and make a lot of money, not necessarily to be great, unique games. Hence the massive flood of WoW-like MMOs we've seen since that game took off, for example, and likewise the numerous changes that have been made to that game over the years.

Yeah I hate that. Big name devs are so afraid to try something new because they are afraid it might fail. So they do the standard revamp every single year like with the COD franchise. They know that people will buy it as long as it says COD on it so they don't even try to be innovative anymore. Im a big FPS guy and I hate that. I mean I get it there is only so much you can do with a FPS to make it different but they could at least try. Right now Im enjoying Titanfall because although it feels like most other FPS's it's still different enough to where I can still enjoy it after 6 months.

That is why I love STEAM. I find a lot of nifty little indie games on there for cheap.

Yeah I love Steam as well. I usually pick up a game or two a month during the sales. I'm still waiting for something to blow my mind either graphically or gameplay wise. And when I say blow my mind I mean the way it was blown when I first saw Mario 64 after playing with 2d sprites my whole life. Or when the first Splinter Cell game came out or Crysis. I honestly didn't think it was even possible to make a game look like Crysis at the time.

I know that nowadays graphics are getting to that point to where it's hard to get a significant increase in what a game looks like. I doubt we will ever again see as big of a jump graphically as we did with SNES and the N64. Thats due to the times. I'm just waiting for the day to where I have to literally double take and look at a game twice to make sure I wasn't watching a movie.

There are people with PCs out there that could theoretically run a video game that looked like the movie Avatar. Devs just know that less than 1% of gamers actually have crazy rigs like that which is why they tend to make games more accessible to the general audience, the PC world is no different. I have no problems with upgrading my PC to play a game I feel is worth the money. So far I haven't seen anything. If Star Citizen delivers on what it promises then that will be the next big overhaul I do to my PC.

Mr. Buzzkill here. I just hate video games. Used to fix them back when they were big boxes in stores and bars. Hated them then, hate them now.

there's an online TES game now. But i stopped playing any TES Game after Oblivion. The franchise is ruined and is just another mediocre "rpg" pandering to casual gamers. Don't take this last comment as a bash at you by the way

My PC is going on four years now and aside from slower RAM (I have DDR2 1800) in every other respect its more poweful than the latest consoles. I don't expect any major leaps in graphics in the near future. This is actually fine by me because games like Far Cry with the ambient lighting and shadows etc are real enough for me and frankly I would prefer that they focus on new ideas. I hated Borderlands graphics although turning off those stupid black lines and cell shading makes the game infinitely better looking.........but I loved the game itself.

TES Online was mediocre at best. I played my month and I might check it out in next year but I am not holding my breath. Skyrim with mods is actually pretty good. I recommend Requiem or SkyRe as they both are complete overhauls of the game. You can just check out the most popular mods at tesnexus.com and they greatly improve Skyrim. I think just about every game I own is modded in some way or another.

Not at all. I don't play TES games much myself, but I enjoyed Daggerfall quite a lot when I finally discovered it, and I've gotten many hours of enjoyment out of Oblivion and Skyrim both. However, nowadays if I play around with one of them, it's Skyrim with a load of realism/immersion mods installed to make it more difficult and more realistic, e.g. having realistic carrying capacity and item weights, realistic combat including deadly arrows, better AI, better lighting, and so on. With enough customisation the game can become something of a medieval simulator :D
