    You can not say that the process for change works and at the same time say that it was okay that the only way real change was able to be passed was by military rule of half the states.

    Its not an opinion its fact

    If the southern states had not gone about violating the constitutional rights of the people, the amendments in question would not have been necessary to begin with.

    Agreed, it still does not change the fact that the amendment process was to hard to get that change with out subverting democracy to get it.

    All but 1 state allows for popular referendum to change the state constitution thus they are democracies.

    The united states federal government is a republic. By extension, all states and cities are also republic by virtue of being a part of the united states. That is ultimately the long and the short of how the matter works.
