If soviet technology was behind in the 80's, what is it now against modern American weapons?

I've often reflected on that. It was a different time and a different people. I doubt if today's population would go to war to save the Union. Can you imagine an 18 year old kid from the Bronx risking his life to keep Texas in the Union if it seceded today? I can't see it.

"What ifs" don't interest me. Its tough enough keeping up with actual facts. "Just imagines" are amusing, but of little value.

It depends on what you are discussing. In the air, nothing Rusian can match our F35. But the Russians have developed a whole family of super RPG's with sophisticated seeker heads. We've never done that with our LAW's, although we can now fire LAW's and avoid back blast. Its not a simple question.

~ There is only one way to know for certain who has what — hopefully that never happens . As it is now governments in several countries are the worst weapon against their own people.

Its not just weapons. Its the level of training, tactics and lots more. Everyone in the US Army was amazed that the Russians lined up bumper to bumper and sat there for weeks getting slaughtered. Leaving the Ukraine's power on... leaving their communications functioning... bridges intact, etc ... all amazing to us.

The Russian Army has no NCO Corp to draw upon and that is a major disadvantage. Ukraine used to be like that but they did crash reforms starting in 2014 along with radically changing military doctrine while going through a training and military procurement process all aimed at fight exactly an invasion from Russia.

An effective NCO Corps is one of the reasons the US Army is as powerful as it is. Most armies are so dependent on Commissioned Officers that when they become casualties, no one else can take over. Our NCO's can fill in when needed.
I Commanded two different Company-sized units. All my NCO's were great guys, but I must admit that in one Company they were nothing short of wonderful.
