IMO, any candidate who runs on 1. cutting the size and power of government, and 2. transferring at least half of the money saved back to the productive working class, would win easily.

At this point I doubt that it will matter to voters so long as half the money saved is transferred immediately into the bank accounts of the productive working class.

 

Maybe. I'm not sure there general electorate is quite willing to sacrifice anything to hand checks to the working class. E.G. Slashing Social Security and Medicare to send workers checks probably isn't going to fly. Similarly, making major cuts to the Defense budget in order to fund stimulus is probably going to stir up a lot of resistance from certain voter segments.

 

Of course, they will oppose any reduction of existing direct transfer payments that hurts them.
So, give them double the money back.

A smart politician would have started with this epic boondoggle:
