I hope this question is ok.
I am really interested in the answer - as a German.

Why would having German ancestors be good or bad?

I can see having NAZI ancestors being shameful, or ancestors who committed warcrimes during WW2, but in general having German ancestors is a nothingburger. Lots of Germans came to the USA long before WW2.

Did you believe any of these 4? :)

    1) Germany is Bavaria.

    2) Germans will accept you as their own because your great-great-great-great-great-grandfather was maybe German.

2a) Maybe rethink that German flag tattoo.

    3) "Don't mention the war."

3a) Germans are somehow ignorant of the Holocaust/try not to think about it.

    4) The Autobahn is some sort of mythical strip of highway somewhere with no speed limits ever.

According to 23&Me, my family is half British and half German, but tracing my family tree there are more records for the German part, so I can trace that back several centuries. I guess in general it's a good thing but it's not unusual. There are probably more German descended folks in the US than in Germany. Culturally, however, whatever German there is has been pretty well assimilated into Southern US culture.
