In 19 days, Biden/Harris will be inaugurated

In 19 days from today, right around 12:00 noon ET, Preisdent-Elect Joseph Robinette Biden will place his hand on the Holy Bible and be sworn in as our nation's 46th president. Before he is sworn in, Vice-President-Elect Kamala Devi Harris will be sworn in as the 49th Vice-President of the USA.

The Vice-Presidential oath will be recited as follows:

I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.

(This is the same oath of office used for Senators, Representatives and a number of other lower elective offices.)

The US Consitution does not specifically require a Vice-Presidential oath of office; therefore, the VP oath is more ceremonial in nature. The presidential oath, however, is required by constitution.

The Presidential oath will be recited as follows:

I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

Before 1937, the Vice-Presidential oath was not taken during the Presidential inauguration ceremony, but rather, before, inside the Senate. There, the incoming Vice-President was usually sworn-in by the President-Tempore of the US-Senate.

The Vice-President is sworn-in before the President in the case that should anything happen to the President-Elect, the Vice-President could then also then be immediately sworn-in as President. It's a safety mechanism that was added to the whole "continuance of governance" (COG) concept.

Regardless whether the oath is taken exactly at 12:00 PM on January 20th, 2021, or not, at that moment, the reigns of power are handed over to the new President and his administration. The nuclear codes are transferred over, the White House now becomes the official residence of the new President, etc etc etc.

The Constitution does not officially provide a private residence for the Vice-President of the United States and his/her family, but over time, it was agreed that for security purposes, Number One Observatory Circle, on the grounds of the US Naval Observatory (about 2.5 miles away from the White House), would be permanently designated as the living quarters of the Vice-Presidential family. This happened in 1974, when the US government decided to refurbish the property and designate it as that official "house" of the Vice-President. His or her working offices, however, are within both the West Wing of the White House and also at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, next to the West Wing.

Walter Mondale was the first Vice-President to actually live there, starting in January of 1977, but Nelson D. Rockefeller, Gerald R. Ford's Vice-President, also the 2nd unelected Vice-President in our history, threw some nice parties there.

BTW, the Naval Observatory is still fully operational. I visited the grounds there in 1997, it was quite a sight to see. And extremely beautiful.

I'm happy for all of you who are excited to see Biden and Kamala sworn in even if it's just in spite of Trump.

I got to enjoy 4 years of Trump despite all of the sore losers so enjoy your 4 years of Biden.
