article on a pro green blog points out the damned if they do and damned if they do not plight of a lot of third world countries. Everyday I wake up and thank God I was born in the USA. The homeless here have it better than most of the third worlds citizens

A quick look at the stats highlights this dilemma. India is immensely energy-poor – it has 300 million of its citizens without access to modern energy supplies, dependent on fuelwood they can gather, often burning dung and charcoal in their houses at a cost of many thousands of premature deaths per year due to indoor air pollution. India also has the world’s fifth-largest coal reserves, and the Modi government is making plans to liberalise the state-dominated and highly inefficient (and corrupt) coal mining sector.

I will just link this graphic since it is so large but here is a NASA pic showing India's pollution problem from space

Air pollution is a severe and persistent problem at the foothills of the Himalaya Mountains in Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh. The haze and pollution back up against the mountains and remain for weeks at a time, posing a severe health hazard. In addition, scientists are beginning to gather evidence that the widespread and persistent nature of the pollution is even modifying the regional weather, particularly rainfall patterns. The pollution comes from inefficient wood and dung-fueled heating and cooking devices, as well as forest fires and industrial and urban pollution.
