OK well dark skinned elves have nothing to do with Tolkien, so what do dark elves have to do with this topic? What point were you trying to make?

There were two points that you missed:

    1) The SOURCES that Tolkien USED involved dark-skinned elves, so it is ridiculous for RW snowflakes to whine about seeing black people with pointy ears on their TV screen on a Tolkien show.
    2) The excuses from the "all the elves have to be white" crowd involve Tolkien's use of the word "fair" to describe elves. "Fair" does not necessarily mean "light skinned" any more than "dark" means "dark skinned." Follow now?

Some people have a deep love and respect for the lore and the canon, and when these works are translated to film, are sensitive to how the portrayals are done. It's typical fan behavior, but since you are not a fan I'm not sure of your concern about this. Why do you care so much about something you're not invested in at all?

What did Tolkien mean when giving physical descriptions of the elves, he described them as "fair?" What did he really mean?

He described some as having dark hair and some as having blonde hair. He described some as having light skin, but never said all had light skin. And since he described at least one elf as being BOTH fair AND light skinned, he obviously didn't mean the word "fair" to just always mean "light skinned." Get it, now?

You keep contradicting yourself. Are you saying that all elves have to be light skinned or not? One minute you say you don't. The next minute you defend people who make that argument by saying the just have a deep love and respect for the lore and the canon . . . . which you (depending on the day, I guess) admit never says all of the elves have to be white. When will you make up your ****ing mind?

You can be fair and have dark hair. But I appreciate your flailing about on this...kinda fun!

Speaking of flailing, can't help but notice you like to pick two or three words out of a post and run and hide in fear of the rest.

Please describe where you think I've contradicted myself because I don't get it.

I described it in the post you just quoted. Try reading. Or keep running away and hiding.

That seemed to be your argument in a nutshell. What other statements from that post would you like me to comment on?

Well I don't think I've contradicted myself at all. You are the one who seems to think that.

I'm not even sure which Lil Mike I'm speaking to right now: the one defending the RW race baiting snowflakes for just being concerned about the source material, or the one who admits that the source material doesn't back up the complaints being made by those same people. I've met both Lil Mikes. Which one am I speaking to now?

Like I said I read the books, and saw the movie. As a Christian, Tolkien saturated the story with Christian messaging/symbolism, which is present in the new series as well, but it seems some people so focused on the skin color of the characters that they don't see the forest from the trees. The series had a slow start but now its picking up steam.

There's only one. Your statement, "...or the one who admits that the source material doesn't back up the complaints being made by those same people..." I define the source material is Tolkien; his statements, letters, and works. And they do back up the people complaining about RoP. You define source material is anything Tolkien might have read. To be clear, it's a discussion of Tolkien and his works, not other unrelated mythos.

Now, is that what you wanted me to comment on?

Could you give me an example so I can properly respond?

If you think the show is "picking up steam" that's great. Enjoy. I can't vouch for that but I'll take your word for it.

As I exit this thread I'll offer one idea that probably explains the overall "meh" this misbegotten "Rings" thing is getting.

In the latest official U. S. census, Blacks make up approximately 14% of the population. FOURTEEN PERCENT. And yet every time you turn on a television in this country and watch nearly anything, whether it's a comedy, drama, sports, action-adventure, promos, commercials, public service announcements -- you name it -- you see such a disproportionately high number of Blacks that it is utterly BIZARRE! Indeed, you would think from watching anything on American TV that our population must be at LEAST one-third Black!

Then the question arises: who deliberately does this, and WHY?

Now, I'll leave the rest of you to argue among yourselves. I'm pretty sure I know the answer, and a lot of other people do, too... if they would just be honest about it....

And I clearly defined the source material I was referring to as material he REFERENCED, not just what he WROTE.

Also, where does the source material you are talking about state that all elves in the setting are white?

Right, but the fact you are claiming other legends and myths as "source material" is ridiculous (in my opinion at least). This is about Tolkien and his work. If you don't regard that as the ultimate source material and canon for a work presented as based on Tolkien, then we just fundamentally disagree on the concept of source material.

That's like arguing that there are red martians in Star Trek canon because Star Trek was influenced by Edgar Rice Burroughs (among many others) space operas, so Red Martians are Star Trek canon.

Now you are just rehashing previous arguments.
