    Here is what BB said:
"What people will stockpile and fight over are"
Ammunition is not powdered sugar. I will use my ammunition (sparingly, mind you), to remain in possession of the things on your list, and the things on my list.
But come on over. I'll give you all of the powdered sugar I have.

No thanks our Diabetes rate is high enough as it is.

But see, most Americans who have the "Doomsday Prepper" mentality have NEVER been in a situation where they were cut off from supplies from the rest of the world.

Now here is a map of Australia
    [IMG]

Now because floods had cut all the roads on the East side of Queensland they were shipping fresh food up from Adelaide via Tennant Creek/Three ways That is sort of like shipping food from Texas to New York via Wyoming. (Mainland USA is roughly the same size as mainland Australia but with fewer deserts )

We did not see panic or even fighting - what we saw was people taking photos of the empty shelves and laughing. Well to be honest it was the tourists taking photos and the locals laughing. See shortages do not scare us - you might have to wipe your arse on a gum leaf for a day or two but things eventually come right

You/we are discussing two very different things here. In the Aussie example, the supplies were still available, but just later in arriving.
Let's imagine that the drought continues and worsens in California. No Sierra snowpack again this coming Winter. There is no viable way to ship the amount of water that it would take to supply over 20M people. In that situation, I believe that ammo stores would be a very good idea, as well as a new address in a wetter place.

And yet it may not come to that - that is my point. See we do not have the degree of "Doomsday Prepping" you have over there we also do not have those who seemingly feed into this and make money from it

And we don't have Kangaroos, and you don't have Caribou. There are way too many things that make up the difference between the US and OZ to even start on. You haven't threatened Russia with a nuclear exchange lately, and so forth.

People really have no idea just how FRAGILE our Food, Medical, Water and Fuel distribution systems are in the face of Natural Disaster never mind war.

Having a weapon and stocked food and water and fuel is only prudent.

Ask anyone who lived in New Orleans.

Why would they be buying all the .22LR, and allowing the sale of surplus M885 (steel core 5.56 NATO) at Wal-Mart?

    Makes absolutely no sense.

And a well placed 5.56 NATO bullet is more deadly than a well placed .22LR.

Shot placement is key, but you cannot argue physics. Nor can you argue the realities of shooting a moving target. .22LR for self-defense, when other options are available, is a poor choice.

Oh! We probably have a better idea than you do. After all this is Australia. We are the country of 'Droughts and flooding rains' We have had more than our fair share of natural disasters. What we do NOT see here is the looting and shooting

Correct, Australians and Americans are different people, we have a gun and violence culture shared by no other. There if the SHTF most Aussies would work together, when it does here that is not always the case, remove power from the US for two weeks and we would be in full blown war among ourselves. Sure groups of us would band together but the thing is we are not wired the same way as Aussies and some would use it as their opportunity to take what they want and kill who they want and the reality is it would be hard to stop it before many bad things occured. So, yes, some of us prepare for just such a scenario, to not do so is to risk everything you care about by trusting your fellow man, Bad Idea here in the Good Old US of A.

But see that is where a lot of 'Doomsday Prepping" mentality becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy. It would also serve to rationalise bad behaviour. As in "I can shoot and loot because everyone else will"

Problem with that thought is that it is not the preppers that will be doing the looting and bad behavior, every one that I know is a family man and woman many with kids, and only a handful of singles and everyone I know are good people. When the water goes off, food supplies run out and power is off bad things start happening quickly, those without become desperate and those with supplies will not be in position to do much other than protect what they have for their own families or group. Most, like myself, hope we never see the day that any off the preperations are needed in a major emergency, but some believe in being ready as an insurance policy. If other don't want to do the same that is their choice, I am not their keeper. I will that last year we had an ice storm here and we were without the ability to even get out on the roads and there was no power for a week. That is some did not have power, everyone on my street had prepared and had their generators running and plenty of fuel on hand to last it out in comfort, no to mention all the camping gear that comes in handy such as lanterns and emergency radios. So prepping is not just about some breakdown in society or war, it is all about natural emergencies and those can be plenty bad and can be just as dangerous as any thing done by man. Not everyone that preps is some sort of milita member they are often just regular people that realizing being prepared for emergencies is a good idea.
