None of these identify what is a "nanny state." Athough jouranists used to describe several countries from US, Singapore, New Zealand, UK, and China, from the Wiki link, none of them meet the truest definition of what a nanny state is or its application. A nanny state is defined as "A government perceived as having an excessive interest in or control over the welfare of its citizens, especially in the enforcement of extensive public health and safety regulations." Since this is subjective by nature, there is no true application of the term to any nation since a nation is held to protect its citizens. We, in the United States do this mostly through the courts such as the Mcdonald's Lawsuit where hot coffee was spillled, for instance. Want to send your child to public or private school, your child will get vaccinated here with each state and the District of Columbia, has into law which vaccines are included. None of them, I do believe, have the Covid Vaccine as one of its mandatory vaccines. Is that an example of a nanny state?

If your government has told you that you can't own and use firearms there's a pretty good chance that you're already deep off in a nanny state

    @Bowerbird
What's your opinion on the subject? Sounds like a lot of the nanny State policies are in full force in the land down under.

Do you need a permit for your Barbie? That's barbecue by the way.

Ok so, let’s see the outcome of this “nanny state” and BTW you left out mandatory seat belts (we were the first country in the world to introduce such legislation, mandatory swimming pool fences (and didn’t that cause an uproar!) etc etc

In fact if you really want to stir the Americans on here let’s talk about mandatory voting!

    Let’s start with mortality rates

See the dark blue - that’s us in fact we are a darker blue than the USA hmmmmmmm

Seems to be you're in a tyrannical state not a nanny, the top tier.
Nanny state meaning, the government telling you to brush your teeth before bed, and to eat all your veggies, that kind of stuff

Sorry old chap I usually give a link if it is hard to see but I was doing about three jobs at once
    https://ourworldindata.org/life-expectancy

Our life expectancy is over 83 years and that is with an indigenous population who sadly are 20 years lower than that

Yes they did! Now I am old enough to remember what happened without seat belts
    upload_2023-7-19_17-29-32.jpeg
it is called a flail chest. Ribs broken both sides of the sternum. Will need ICU for about 6-8 weeks and this is possibly the most painful condition known to man - the pain is often more severe than terminal cancer.

And that is just one - don’t ask what a “La Forte fracture” is and how it has to be treated

I agree with Tim Minchin who said “Do you know what they call alternative medicine that has been shown to work?

    Medicine”

I find it pretty peculiar that a lot of the homeopathic medicines that so-called modern medicine used to ridicule..... They are now synthesizing and studying these natural compounds.

Nothing to do with COVID although the USA life expectancy did drop with the impact of COVID and don’t just take my word on that but back to your “nanny state” claim
    https://au.finance.yahoo.com/news/1...k3ojVyMxdKja0oEQgicyQKpNUMv6mWxXnibD0uzEuIA2k
let’s start with it is essentially an opinion piece by some unknown TWONK written in 2016!

So, let’s start with point 1 - lockout laws

Sooooo a law that is NOT Australia wide - not even statewide but specific to one area in Sydney

Cycling laws - again not Australia wide

Hang on are you aware of how expensive it is to treat a head injury? Forget about the lives saved think of the taxpayer cost

I am going to lump the anti cigarette laws into one
    upload_2023-7-19_18-10-30.png

    We are getting there! Yay!

Before you defend homeopathy I suggest you look it up because it is hilarious! I think you mean naturopathy or rather CAM Complimentary and Alternative medicines.

Homeopathy is bunk in its purest form. In 2011 James Randi offered a prise of one million dollars if anyone could prove it works - that prize is still unclaimed
    https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smar...ts-conclude-homeopathy-doesnt-work-180954534/

In fact my favourite skit on homeopathy is this

CAMS themselves though are a different kettle of fish, wild roots and herbs. There is a huge resource out there in native medicines that we have barely scratched the surface of

It doesn't matter what name you call it by. I know that natural medicine Trump's big pharma.

Remember... I'm a semi-old hippie who has probably eaten more psilocybin mushrooms than your body weight

Yes and I also remember the poor sod who was treated with acupuncture for snakebite - pity the snake was a Taipan

But I ain't ate mushrooms in about 20 years.

That Taipan bite probably would have been preventable of mortality if they would have just used the known amount.

From what I understand is that they are referring to modern times and not the stone age. :D
But yes indeed, those times were when you rubbed a bit of dirt on it and soldiered on to the next adventure.

Wasn't traditional homeopathic medicine first ridiculed as "witchcraft" by modern science?

But yet where did modern science get most of its base ingredients to work from?

Naturally occurring in nature in the form of plants and animals and minerals.

Yes, way back in 2014 when they started.
It doesn't have to be "Australia-wide", it happening in Australia's nanny state NSW along with many other nanny laws and policies.
