The UN is a big waste of time and money. Countries manipulate it to get what they want and when they don't they ignore it. Believe it or not, countries act in their own best interest, not in the UN's.
I agree that a passing of a Security Council resolution does reinforce international law. The United States by abstaining, however, is reserving an endorsement, persistently the only member to do so, with minor exceptions. It grants some political cover to Israel which routinely scoffs at UN resolutions. In the end, the probable United States' indication that it will not use its veto when the French advance a United Nations Security Council resolution on Jewish settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, will be nothing new.
not using their Veto power was as good as allowing passage of the resolution. if they REALLY wanted the resolution to fail, they would have vetoed it.
You overestimate UN resolutions. Israel can live with them as long as the United States remains its one true ally.
Israel's settlement policy is the cause of the increase in violence says U.S. Secretary of State "Expansion of building in settlements has increased Palestinian frustration, leading to the current upswing in violence, Secretary of State John Kerry told an audience at Harvard University Tuesday evening." http://www.timesofisrael.com/ It is a welcome change to see the United States get in line with world opinion. I am sure this message was conveyed to Prime Minister Netanyahu by President Obama.
Not to speak of the Muslim block of 65 plus states that could vote any resolution and pass it with flying colors. Now let us all vote that the earth is flat, let us vote the sun will move to another galaxy and perhaps vote that the US is decadent and win the day!!! MOD EDIT - Rule 2
United States “traditionally hostile toward Israel” -- Israel Public Security Minister This has got to be news to the rest of the world. The U.S. Department of State, the part of the Executive branch of government was described as “traditionally hostile toward Israel,” by Israel's Public Security Minister, Gilad Erdan. http://www.timesofisrael.com/kerry-blasts-reprehensible-attacks-on-civilians/ Considering how many billions of U.S. taxpayers' dollars, principally in the form of weaponry, are donated annually without strings and the State Department's furnishing of political cover for the Jewish state, this looks terribly like biting the hand that feeds them. One has to wonder what planet Erdan inhabits that he would openly criticize his country's sole ally in the world. Gilad Erdan
