I enjoy some of the discussions I have on FB as a result of articles people post and I enjoy reading things I would never otherwise read. So, not being able to post from local media will make FB a bit less interesting for me. However, it will also make it less combative, and it still has value as a way to keep up wiht far flung friends & acquaintances.

I'm certainly not going to quit it because I can;t read or post local news or because some of the things it allows don't match my politics or personal standards.

I left FB about the time they started pushing news into the feeds more aggressively (2016)

I bet the majority of Facebook users don’t use it for news or politics.

I wouldn’t mind if Facebook didn’t have news. I don’t go there for news anyway. Never cared. It’s just a way to easily share photos and family stuff. I don’t love in AU so...

Hmm.. Of course this wasn't the issue. The issue in Australia was that they were no longer going to simply allow FB or google to present the copywrite content of the local news there without compensation. Both Google and now FB have suggested that's not something they are willing to pay for, so, the reason for the fight. Google and FB believe that they shouldn't have to pay folks for their content. Why did you come in swinging with your deflection?

Perhaps reading the links was too much effort. From the first link:

By rejecting the decisions of our elected representatives to implement the findings of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s review of its monopoly power, Facebook is asserting its commercial interests should prevail over the public interest. Indeed, Facebook seems more comfortable with its networks supporting despots and dictatorships by algorithmically fomenting division than respecting a government working in support of democracy.

Hmm.. An Eisenhower guy supporting content manipulation for revenue... Who would have thought that possible...

The woeful lack of understanding here is, well... not surprising. So, you support piracy over fair compensation for effort? Seems as much.

I agree with you here, FB is to keep in contact with friends and family at a more holistic level. I have even met new people/friends on FB due to association with others.

    For that FB is good.

If I never see anyone I went to HS with again it will be too soon.

Do newspapers or tv or anyone normally pay for news they put on their service?

If FB no longer offers their services in Australia what is Australia going to do? Send policemen to America to arrest Zuckerberg?

Simple Simple solution.... don't get your "news" from Facebook...

If there's a war between Australia and Zuckerberg, my money is on the country over a smart wimp....

Other than one or two, I never really kept in touch with hs friends, but I have no ill will towards them.

Same here. I didn't want to be around those people when I had to be. Why would I want to stay "in touch" with them afterward. No thanks.

I can see both sides of this disagreement. FaceBook doesn't want to pay for copywrite-protected materials but they also provide advertising by having that information on their site. Or, it's just more of Zuckerberg wanting to be King of Universe.

MeWe us a touch to the Conservative side, but an alternative.

It really is time to not let Zuckerberg and the like control so much of what people do. Better yet, reduce social media altogether, and go back to real socializing, even if it involves masks and 6 feet apart to keep you comfortable.

Facebook isn't the only place to get news. I never use Facebook and I get more news than I want.

I agree. The day I rely upon facebook for news is a sad one. Living away from family and friends, FB is great for me to 'keep up'.

Do you have all your old friends phone numbers ? In addition, cell phone subscribers don't advertise their numbers, in fact there is an official do-not-call list to keep cell phone subscribers anonymous.
