    Justice Dept. Rejects South Carolina Voter ID Law

    By Michael Winter,| USAToday | 12/28/2011

    Excerpts:

    “The Justice Department has rejected South Carolina's voter-identification law, saying it discriminates against minorities.

    Gov. Nikki Haley, who signed the bill into law, called the decision "outrageous," The State reports.

    "We plan to look at every possible option to get this terrible, clearly political decision overturned so we can protect the integrity of our electoral process and our 10th amendment rights," she said.

    The Justice Department said that during an appeal the South Carolina law would be "legally unenforceable."

    The Republican National Lawyers Association says the decision "was based on inaccurate data about the number of South Carolina voters who actually have photo identification."

    The head of the NAACP, Benjamin Todd Jealous, issued the following statement:

    "The purpose of the Voting Rights Act is to ensure our elections are free and fair. The impact of this law would have taken South Carolina back to a place where its elections were neither. The Department of Justice's decision ensures all eligible South Carolinians will have access to the ballot box in 2012and beyond. South Carolina's voter ID law was little more than a 21st Century poll tax. While the ID may have been free, the underlying documents were not. For many rural and poor South Carolinians, such as those born to midwives that could not ensure they received birth certificates, getting the necessary documents to vote was extremely complex and cost prohibitive.

    While some may quibble over the intent, there is no doubt the effect of this law would disproportionately block black South Carolinians from voting."

    Here's what South Carolina required to vote:

    You must have one of the following items to vote on Election Day:

    * Voter Registration Card*

    * Driver's License

    * DMV-issued ID Card

    *If you registered to vote by mail, are voting for the first time, and did not submit proof of ID with your application; you may not vote with only your voter registration card. Additional ID, such as a driver's license, will be required.

    Assistant Attorney General Thomas E. Perez said "tens of thousands of minorities in South Carolina may be unable to cast ballots under the law because they don't have the right identification," the Associated Press writes.

    The Justice Department has rejected South Carolina's voter-identification law, saying it discriminates against minorities, The Washington Post reports.

    The Post says the state now has two options: convincing federal courts to uphold the law or passing a revised measure for the Justice Department to approve.

    Thirteen other states also require voters to show state-issued photo identification, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

    The Post writes that today's decision "could heighten political tensions over the new laws, which critics say could depress turnout among minorities and others who helped elect President Obama in 2008."

    ………

    Gov. Haley is a rabid T-Partier that seeks to extinguish the right of certain classes to vote, and then calls the Justice Department ruling a “political move” as they try to secure voting rights to minorities in South Carolina.

    Minorities are the primary voters for President Obama, and their absence could greatly improve the republican/T-Party faction to choose a rich, establishment winner in the presidential elections.

    Many states are now redistricting and securing new rules to try to eliminate minorities from the voting polls. They don’t have a chance to win with the candidates they have, so are intent on keeping as many minorities away from the polls to get a win anyway they can.

    Votng is one of the last of the eights provided by our Democracy that is still intact. When we lose that, there is nothing left to be heard by the government that will concern us.

    Don't you have a nice uninteresting article to offer? Do you always run around searching out duplicate articles..and that are not really duplicates as they give different sides to a debate; each one clearly as valuable and appropriate as the other.

    Why can't you stand to hear both sides to a subject?

    Please explain how having either a driver's , license, voter ID , or BMV ID "disproportionately effects blacks"...

    So people who don't drive should have their constitutional right to vote stolen from them?

    .....

    1) Why would anyone go to the Division of Motor Vehicles if he doesn't own a car or doesn't drive? Why would he go to the Division of Motor Vehicles to get a ID if he has a local address, and is in the voters registry where he has voted previously?

    2) Who are the Fraudocrats? Or is that the newest movie you've seen lately?

    btw: Hope you enjoyed your Christmas...:-D

    To get a photo ID period.

    My mother did not drive yet she realized the value of having a photo ID. So she had a family member take her to the DMV and obtained a photo ID.

    And this was over 30 years ago.

    I can't imagine why it seems to be such a daunting task these days.

    It isn't;pleading the stupidity of their voters has been a longterm ploy of the Fraudcrats.

    Remember Florida, 2000? They couldn't read the ballots right, they couldn't work the machines, they couldn't punch the punch cards, and when all that failed,and they still lost BOTH LEGAL RECOUNTS, they tried to illegally "make votes" out of spoiled ballots, in three Fraudonrat controlled counties,with no standards whatsoever, in blatant violation of the US Constitution , and Florida election laws.

    The Fraudocrats will TRY ANYTHING...

    If you can register to vote, you should be able to obtain an ID.

    The current DOJ has established that they are quite racist and totally partisan politcally. This current statement is totally in keeping with their record.

    Absolutely. There is nothing "racist" about requiring i.d. to vote but in Obama's politicized (In)Justice Department enabling voter fraud is their top priority, it would seem.

    How do people function with no ID? How do they cash checks? To say people do not have ID is wrong and an excuse to keep using voter fraud to win elections. The democrats are afraid without voter fraud they can not win elections.

    Notice a voter registration card is an acceptable form of ID.

    There was a day when you were supposed to show picture ID and a Social Security card to get a job.
