It kind of depends on the times. For example, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson owned black slaves but that was pretty typical of the times. Blackface wasn't considered racist a just a few decades ago. I don't think we should be too harsh critics of the past by the standards of today.

Next we have to consider the severity of the racism. Even today, celebrities who do blackface are widely condemned, and have to profusely apologize but it doesn't necessarily destroy careers although it damages them.

We also have to consider whether the person was young when the act was committed and he long since grown out of the behavior. We have all done things we want to forget about in our younger days.

I'd rather vote on the issues rather than what some politician dressed up as when he was in college.

Yes I am. Black actors have done whiteface many times and manage to avoid condemnation. This is a complete double standard. It got so ridiculous when some people got in trouble for applying black makeup to their faces to pretend to be white coal miners. Its ok to dress up like a white person, Asian, or an Indian, or an Arab, or a Black person. Just don't use it to mock or degrade them, and don't use it to take away their acting roles.

Saying that black face is wrong because it has been used by racists is like saying that all guns are bad because they have been used for murder.

It's really quite simple, AJ. You'd be amazed what being a teacher and having to remember hundreds of names of kids with new ones coming in every week does for the memory and having remembered what you wrote about JW, it was easy to do a quick search to find that post where your feelings in THIS thread do not quite match the same in that one. You appear to think that just because you've limited access to your profile that we can't search your posts. I assure you, this is another fallacy on your part.

Now, the interesting thing here is that you've done everything in your post save explain why it is that we have two instances of racism happening a very long time ago and yet to you John Wayne is incredibly racist (which is true) but Trudeau means nothing at the very same time. You can attempt to deflect away from this truth by self-indulgently fantasizing about people following your posts out of some kind of devotion but the plain fact is that people look up your posts simply to prove you wrong - and you make it so easy to do. The fact that you cannot account for the disparity in your viewpoints towards JW and JT in your post but instead look away FROM it only makes it more obvious. And if there's one thing I love doing, it's deconstructing posts from people who are clearly and plainly wrong. Beyond that, ensuring that others can see how easy it is to prove how - varied - your viewpoints are based on whether you approve of someones politics or not is just as entertaining.

Now, I've explained my POV - I think it's a bit unfair to hold people to today's standards based on their actions decades ago. But at the same time the LW - or as you might put it, the LW Fever-Swamp Borg Drones - having castigated and unloaded their Two Minutes Hate onto JW and any other RW person who has engaged in the same behavior, it makes it difficult for them to turn around and NOT hold their own accountable. Because when they don't - they end up looking mighty foolish. The LW has essentially put themselves in a position where they MUST ask for JT's blood as they have from others - they've boxed themselves in. Meanwhile we have you condemning one and excusing the other and we have your own words proving it so.

How does that end up looking? I don't expect you to respond to that, but to everyone else the answer is obvious.

I only remember people getting in trouble with blackface in the past few years. It it true that it was considered offensive for many before that, but it wasn't a potential career ender it is today.

And I believe that Meghan Kelly was absolutely unfairly treated. It seems that many on the left, rather than respecting other opinions, would rather try to ruin their careers for having opposing opinions. Kelly had some valid points, and instead of listening and debating them, people decided to scream racist and shout her down. In an attempt to save her career, she tried to deliver a fake apology she didn't believe in, but even that wasn't enough for them because she dared to challenge their opinion.

Trudeau and even I, if I was in public office, would of course give a ton of apology if a blackface photo came out, because we know what happens to people who question the left-wing ideology on blackface. Most celebrities and politicians who have had blackface photos surfaced, have apologized profusely, whether they meant it or not, and most saved their careers by doing so.

 

My Dad retired from decades of teaching, ag and horticulture. Glad he retired.

Blackface used to be fairly normal and wasnt viewed racist in the past,

there is a tradition in flanders and the netherlands with a dutch version of santa claus where the people aiding a old man by climbing the chimney(to give presents to children) are all blackfaced, that has been call for controversy the last few years but nobody complained about it 10years ago,
