I know this is the Gun Control Section but I am curious what everyones opinion on knives are?

I beleive everyone should have a knife but that might just be because I grew up always carrying a knife and lighter (My grandfather raised me and was a cowboy) I used to be the exact same way as him and he is the reason I am how I am.

My girlfriend carries two or three and I am usually carrying 2 (one for self defense and one for use out in public when needed)

I am wondering what your opinions on them are?

I always carry my Leatherman (I cannot imagine life without it), and a KBAR when I am up in the mountains/hunting/fishing/shooting/whatever.

Same always a good boyscout. Knife, lighter/matches (don't smoke), P38, never know when you might need one. Can do a lot with those three items.

I just wondered I carry (At all times)

    a knife (JApanese carpenters knife)
A Buck 119 (when I feel like carrying a fixed)
    or a Kershaw Skyline
    a Mini Mag Light
Leatherman Wave (I have two of these, a skeletool, two different gerber models I change every now and then)
    Zippo lighter
Stainless steel pen (I can stab someone with this in self defense as well as my knives)
and a few little odds and ends (Little multi tool thing, and pliers)

I usually carry a vest with an assortment of knives, pepper spray, fish hooks, two uzies, and silly string for the chance meeting of grumpy pedestrians.

    Can't be too careful.

I rarely carry anything for self defense, having knife on me is more of a practical issue for me. Besides if I am accosted by an armed aggressor, don't need a weapon since one conveniently is already there and available. I'll just take theirs and use it against them.

Ultimate shame to be shot or stabbed with your own weapon.

In my home, well that is a shoot to kill zone for illegal trespassers intent on doing bodily harm or stealing stuff. Everybody in the family is well trained and proficient with numerous legal tools of destruction.

You probably won't need a fighting knife, or a gun if you stay out of dangerous areas--typically in the US they are any high crime area controlled by liberal democrats with high murder rates.

However, some survival experts say you should always have on your person (where allowed) at all times:

A knife --probably folding (I usally use a CRKT M16-12M folding pocketknife)

A lighter---BICs weigh nothing and cost nothing, so keep some everywhere

    A light---even a small LED keychain type

A compass---I have a Sunnto compass I can wear on a sports watchband.

Check, check, check, and check. All present and accounted for I also keep a magnifying glass and a mirror in my truck just in case. Yet I haven't ever needed a compass, lived in heavy forests like in Colorado and Alaska, and deserts like in Arizona and Texas, although I always have one close by.

As a side note, because it isn't protected in the constitution, sometimes knives are more restricted that guns.

For example you could hypothetically get a carry permit for a gun in my state. But fixed blade knives are illegal to carry concealed, and I don't believe there to be any mechanism to excempt someone from that.

I am against the carrying of guns in public but I am in favor of them being used at home for self protection.
I am in favor of knives being used to protect yourself outside. They are banned over here, you'll get arrested if you dare carry one, even for self defense.
I have two SAK's and it angers me that I can't carry them.

Not if you fly. Not in a courthouse. Not in a school. Not in a bar.

My grandfather gave me my first knife, a Barlow with one blade, when I was six. He said a man always has his pocket knife and you can judge a man's character by how well he cares for his knive. Now, 54-years later, I carry my knife, it's sharp and well oiled. I try and keep it a secret from the government.

I've quit flying but when I did I would put my pocket knife in my luggage but when the second one got stolen I just started buying spares to leave with friends where I visited.

I don't have guns or want guns but I want my pocket knife. Oh, I want my walking stick, too, but in England that's an offensive weapon. So, crawl you crippled nitwit.

    Silly string. I like that.
I may start carrying a small knife. I think it's a good idea. I always carry a small flashlight. You never know. You may break down in your car at night and need one.

In Texas, befor I worked for a school district I could walk in to pick up my cousins with a knife on my side showing, I have never had a problem, when I was in school parents would use their knives to cut box's or what not when they came for parent days.

I know in mexico when I would go I would just buy a throw away knife at one of the small stores in reynosa and toss it befor I came back across (usually cheap pop metal knives)

I carry a small knive every day for box's or paper (when I cant find scissors or such) Comes in handy, Flashlight helps broken on the side of the road working on a scooter. lol

I feel that a knife is a tool. I have a concealed weapons permit and carry a snub nosed revolver for self defense.

I usually carry two knives. One is a fully serrated Spyderco Endura for cutting items like rope, cardboard or wire. The other is a fixed blade knife with a 4" blade and a plain edge for food prep.

The fixed blade that I have on my belt right now is the Northwoods Buffalo Skinner sold at Knivesshipfree.com. I plan to use it after I finish this post to slice up some potatoes and fry them.

I work in an office, ....so I don't carry a knife on my person. I do however wear chain mail for protection while at my work station. Can't be too careful these days.

I do too, however, I don't carry it for protection, but as a tool. I can't knife fight, and it would be ridiculous for me to try. A blade, though, is often useful.

There are free videos and e-books about Knife Fighting, you just have to search for its torrent. Might be helpful someday.
