Likely the dept knows how messy it’ll be in court for any person of color he arrests. A defense attorney would have a field day with this.

You don't know he is a Klan lover and that is the point about his firing. What else was considered, the results of the investigation are supposed to be released this week. If they don't have some evidence of Klan involvement or racist behavior he may have a HUGE lawsuit.

Unlike you, I trust the police. You seem the kind who would disobey a cop.

Its a piece of history. Perhaps the offended person can show up with a mob and burn it along with any books on the subject.

We've seen cops executing unarmed people through choking in the streets with a camera in their face.
The coroners say the cop killed him. The police fired him, because the choke hold is illegal. The city paid millions in damages. Yet we still got people backing up the cop because "he is innocent",.. because some gimp appointed by a politician doesn't want to prosecute.

I am going to agree with you. I really dislike firing people for expressing unpopular or offensive views, but I make some exceptions and one of them is law enforcement. ( we really cannot tolerate the perception that cops, or prosecutors or even correction officers, create by publicly expressing anti gay, anti black views. But he has not put out anything suggesting bigotry or discriminatory treatment on any facebook post, nor is there evidence that he has a history of spouting off crap about blacks in the local bar, or some white supremist bumper sticker on his car. He is not advocating for racist policy or even racist stereotypes. The only evidence that exists, is this single relic of a document, that got discovered via happenstance, and that alone need not mean anything.

I do not think it is sufficient proof that his presence on the force is compromising the integrity of local law enforcement. Its just too little evidence by itself, on which to make any rational claim that he has it, to celebrate white supremist or racist views.

Probably. That'd be quite the find.

I have dozens of Confederate bills printed during the civil war. They're basically like Pokemon... gotta catch them all... or in this case, collect all the editions.

Some are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

That was a really big dude with serious health issues. Made the cop look like a midget.

The politicians, as usual, are the serious criminals. Of course, the cops should have hit him with a water balloon, or even better bought out his inventory, posed for selfies and moved on to the next call.

The poor guy died for selling single cigarettes out of a pack.

One of two problems exist here. Either the problem is that A. his racist views will alter the way he does his job, or B. that the public perception of his expressed views with alter the way the public sees how the police force does its job.
We don't have much evidence that he is racist, and we have zero evidence that such views compromised the way he does his job. One of the reasons we have so little evidence of racism is because either because it does not exist, or he hides it well. If he is working to hide it, then he is not doing much 'expressing' that is likely to compromise the image of the department.

If I were his chief, I might ask some questions, do some snooping about him, see what is in his file, double check what I can find out via facebook etc or see if I can goad him online into expressing real racism and get him to connect it to his actual work, etc to see if there is a larger problem.

But on this framed historical relic alone, I'd just ask him if he'd mind moving the damn thing to his bedroom wall, so that people who he invited, might not get the wrong idea because mostly what he puts on his wall in the presumed privacy inside his house, is none of anyone else's business. I sure would not fire the guy!

My dad was a DA for 15 years. In his library sat Mein Kampf, the collected speeches of some Segregationist ( don't remember the name) Mao's little Red book, Lenin, Marx, Anton LaVey ( Satanist) and he invited everyone down to his library! Next to those sat Churchill, FDR, Martin Luther King Eisenhower, Gandhi, Barry Goldwater, Cardinal Fultan sheen .... all of which I had complete access to from the age I could reach them.

It just takes one easily offended idiot lacking imagination, or a troublemaker with an agenda, to make a melodrama out of his love of history or ideas.

The choke hold is still illegal. The cop got fired because of that. The city paid millions in damages in a civil suit. The coroners all point at the cop for killing the guy. And all people got to defend it, is a politically appointed idiot not wanting to prosecute the cop, and so claim he's innocent. That's all what they got going. And in the same way, people defend this cop,... even though the police have accepted that the clan supporter must go.

While a family made billions selling a highly addictive drug. It doesn't look like they are going to jail.
And you got that Garner getting killed over nothing. An other guy was giving life without parole for stealing 50 bucks.
Yeah... "maybe" the skin color has to do with something in the US. Just "maybe".

And we've seen racial pandering by government officials after a police officer has been cleared of charges by a grand jury, the most important legal body in our system of justice, and the US Department of Civil Rights.

Gotta love how Trumpism has gotten so Orwellian that they have to even redefine the word "fake." It doesn't matter how true something is, only how offended they are by it.

I have a refrigerator magnet of Che which I got on my trip to Cuba and one of Obama wearing a Red Army cap looking up into the distance (as in a famous photograph of Mao) I got on my trip to China, but I admire none of the men mentioned.

Collecting odd refrigerator magnets from the places I visit is just my hobby and great conversation starters.

Gotta go with justifiable firing on this. Doesn't matter what he believes or not, displaying that stuff as a cop is an indicator of extremely poor judgment. Could be the nicest, least racist person in the world. Could be BLACK or FEMALE for that matter, but I don't want someone with that level of poor judgment walking around with a firearm and police power.
