Yep... British Colony != Canada Wasn't Canada. There were oligarchies and revolutions... unifications... before the country that is Canada would be birthed... Is the United States of America a British colony? Is Canada a British colony? Canada did not exist in 1812. Yes the land mass was there. THE COUNTRY did not exist.
oh, the COUNTRY of Canada didn't exist!! well you should have said that in the first place. the COLONIES of Canada, did however, exist.
Unless you thought the war of 1812 was with polar bears and Inuit... of course this is implicit. We picked a fight with the British crown... not Canada. It did not exist.
These threads are always hilarious. Canadians are the Jan Brady of the Western world. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yZHveWFvqM
the war of 1812 was not the topic of the op. and the colonies of Canada were part of Britains Empire so you got a fight with them by default.
The survey was part of the preparations for the upcoming bicentennial of the war of 1812... (the op is from 2011 btw). I just wanted the Canadians who are suggesting we be better educated to be aware that they didn't exist then, and the war wasn't with them... it was with the British. It directly references the OP and the underlying point of piety and education. It was funny to boot. You will not invalidate my position.
I still don't see what it's supposed to prove. Obviously this lack of knowledge on our part has not been a hindrance in our ability to maintain a prosperous and peaceful relationship with Canada. I just don't see the reason why I should be ashamed of this. I don't know the capital of every single state of the US, either. Although I do enjoy picking random bits of useless information here and there, I don't feel a great embarrassment when I'm unaware of it. If I need to know it one day, I have google at my disposal. At least I did learn a new bit of useless information from this thread today; it wasn't a total loss of bandwidth.
of course they existed. they were inhabitants of upper and lower Canada. and they were damn sure they didn't want to be any part of that insane asylum south of the border.
For all the Americans are stupid or fat or lazy or whatever... Which country has the best athletes in the world...just look at the Olympics for proof. Which country has produced the most successful and powerful businesses in the world...no comparison there. Where did the internet begin? Who went to the moon? Who essentially protects the world and keeps rogue nations from getting out of control? Where have the most medical advances come from? And the list goes on and on and on. The U.S is at the forefront of mostly everything. So, go ahead and hate us, but know you'd be ^$&*#*@#( without us. Can't say that about just about any other nation, besides maybe China and if push came to shove, we could produce what China does if we head to, because we have the resources or could ramp up. Can't say that for any other country on earth, besides possibly Russia, but do they even have the organization to do it? If Canada dropped off the planet tomorrow, what would be the biggest loss? What do they produce we can't get elsewhere or truly need? I knew the Capital of Canada and plenty of other nations 25+ years ago when I studied geography. If given a multiple choice, I would've picked it out, but off the top of my head, I forgot about Ottawa. Its simply not important to most people because besides a nice tourist destination, no one could give 2 poops about Canada here, unless you like Hockey. Its less of sign of our intelligence and more a sign of your insignificance. Sorry if that hurts. I'm plenty successful not having Ottawa imprinted on my brain. Ask people what the capital of France, Russia or England is you'll get much higher numbers. Why? They're a bit more important or have more significance. Sucks, don't it=)
They picked a fight with us, by kidnapping, and then pressing our seamen into service in the British Navy, among other offenses.
Canada did not exist until July 1, 1867. Ottawa did not exist until 1855. The United States of America existed as of July 4, 1776 (recognized September 3, 1783) We did not war with Canada. We warred with the British. We have never had a war with Canada. We share the worlds largest undefended border. Glad we uneducated insane people could enlighten you on the history of Canada.
I think what really pisses them off so much is that the US really does not "need" anyone else for anything, and does not bother letting them know that. All other nations are dependent on another country for something...food, water, power, technology, whatever. The US does not. Because of that, we have no incentive to compromise. That irritates the hell out of foreigners. - - - Updated - - - I think what really pisses them off so much is that the US really does not "need" anyone else for anything, and does not bother letting them know that. you invaded the british colonies of Canada and the colonists of those colonies (called Canadians) resisted. sorry pal.
The British citizens, yes. Sorry if you do not understand. Canada did not exist in 1812. British colonies did, in what is NOW the sovereign country of Canada. To suggest we invaded Canada would be like saying the British colonized the United States... which did not exist until after the colonization and revolution. If I can be of further assistance, let me know.
and that shows how uninformed americans are , not to be aware of where so much of their energy and raw materials come from and who buys so much of their exports. incredible
Which has NOTHING TO DO with the Candadian government, which sponsored the study. We attacked provinces of the British Empire. Is this really that hard for you to grasp? We have NEVER had a war with Canada. Canada did not exist in 1812... you do know what Canada is right? Maybe we should start there... what do you think Canada is?
