Well, since the model worked in the early universe, I'd say there's a good chance it is valid. Maybe there used to be more sources of this ionizing UV light, and the hydrogen just stayed ionized.
Light sources and light are not the same thing. If we are missing sources, we need to adjust our knowledge. If we are simply missing light, we need to change our batteries, or change our bulb. Dark light would explain the data. But so would the big spaghetti monster. Belief has always been a panacea of the confused. I am stupid, I am confused, but that also may be a manifestation of my limited ability to think. Great minds tend to think that we are missing light data. I don't know.
