Lobstering restrictions off Maine’s coast paused following court ruling (msn.com)

According to a release from the Maine Lobstering Union, the trade group was granted emergency relief by the U.S. District Court for the District of Maine to stop the closure of the roughly 1,000 square mile area.

Hope it is overturned , many people rely on this for income , also they should start to diversify because this is the beginning of the end

Right, because over-fishing a species will end their livelihoods that much faster.

You people don't know how to do anything in moderation. It's excess, excess, excess to the excess squared.

I'm guessing you're oblivious to the over-kill in Alaska. That's why there's quotas on salmon and Alaskan king crab and other fish in the area.

And, then you got that chef guy, Emeril, I think it was. He came up with the whole "blackened" thing and next thing you know, red snapper is almost extinct because it got over-fished after that segment of his TV show aired, so they had to put quotas on that.

Also, Chilean sea bass. Had to put quotas on that, too.

The really sad thing is, over half that stuff gets tossed in the garbage because it spoils in the stores, since the demand for it really isn't that high.

I just wonder what kind of set ups they are using if this is supposedly about stopping whale deaths. There seems to be a disconnect a mile wide between the pretense and the policy.

I think the lobsterman say there are not Whales in that area , If they do this (stopping lobstering) it will drive the prices way up.

Well even if there were whales, I still dont see how a cage at one end, buoys at the other and a rope in between would kill anything but a suicidal whale unless they have some elaborate set up I am unaware of.

Anyway, not a huge fan of lobster myself. I think it has no real taste other than what you add to it. I'll eat it if I must, but usually go for something else if it is available.

I am not, however, of side ways policy initiatives. If this is about creating better stocks in the wild, then say that is why you are doing it. If you want to save whales, however, this policy really seems disconnected from that IMO.

"Federal officials argued the closure is necessary to help protect endangered North Atlantic right whales from extinction."

yeah, not buying a lobster ban to save the whales

probably vegans trying to use any excuse to ban meat and fish

For seafood, my first choice is always oysters. Flounder is second. Scallops I can take or leave. I like the smaller ones better than the big ones. We used to do crab by the bushel when I lived closer to the coast, but that has been half a lifetime ago.
