So we grow a lot of our own food. We preserve a lot of food. We can, freeze, dehydrate, freeze dry (just starting), etc.

Covid was a good test of how it’s working. Because we have plenty of food and necessities I never had to worry about Covid the disease or Covid restrictions etc. It was nice not to have to worry.

As a kid we were dirt poor. We grew some apples and other fruit. In my lunch at school I was eating shriveled yellow delicious apples that were months old while other kids were eating Little Debbie snack cakes and gummy fruit snacks.

Anyway a couple years ago as we were picking apples I started wondering how long an apple would keep in cold storage. So I put some apples in the bottom drawer of a fridge mostly dedicated to vaccine storage. It rarely gets opened so temp remains constant.

Tonight I’m taking these three apples and making an apple bread pudding with caramel sauce. The apples are exactly two years old. Wrinkled and slightly soft but no signs of spoilage. Some of the apples I stored did go bad.

I guess it’s possible to store apples two years. There are a couple good ones left so we will see how long they last.
