Notice how none of them are EVER on unemployment or minimum wage but they always argue to increase unemployment or minimum wage.

Almost all the responses to the OP were anticipated in the OP. I dropped various clues and hints about my point but those fell on deaf ears. As much as I loathe using cliff notes because they discourage authentic thinking, I see I have to do that for our anti-union, anti-government friends.

The supply and demand crowd came in crowing that I don’t know S&D (one putative ‘economist’ even mentioned equilibrium to prove that unions harm pricing according the S&D law…but he really supports unions….with friends like that, who needs far right extremists). The OP predicted this, and really, simple definitions of S&D are available on any search engine. You extremists just did what I anticipated: you showed your prejudice contrived of programming by the monied elites. “Don’t worry boss, we’ll protect you at our own expense. See? It’s all unions corrupting our pure and free market! You hate yourselves, choosing instead to live in a fantasyland where you and the employer share the same interests and values. But you’re not the same. You’re just programmed that way: hatred of government, hatred of labor, and hatred of yourself.

Supply and Demand determine prices. The unemployed workforce is the supply of workers and the employer looking to hire someone to work for her is the demand (for whatever reason-replacement or expansion, she is hiring).

Prices are always offers of prices and not the actual prices. Some price offers are firm (like for sundry goods where it is impractical to negotiate the price for each item-except for coupons) and some prices are negotiable. Got it so far?

Big ticket items like homes, cars and services are generally bargained for the best deal for both sides. The very flower of the market….unless you’re a right wing extremist governed by your anti-government /anti-labor prejudices. The current market opinion of price for the position provides a baseline / guidance. The employer will always make a lowball offer for the services of labor to minimize her costs of doing business. It’s the smart thing to do and this is what the anti-labor group never understands. For the right wing extremist, this is supply and demand and the offer ends here – labor must take it or leave it. Talk about soft, impotent beta inclinations. These guys can’t even bargain for the best price of their own labor.

Both S and C corporations / LLCs / Partnerships are creatures of governmental statute as are Labor Unions. So much for government favoring Labor. But for government, neither corporations nor labor unions have the force of law. The corporations, by design, are top-down controlled totalitarian entities. Unions offer strength in numbers. The bargaining field is more level than it would be with individuals capitulating to the demands of the employer. Both parties bargain for value and are in a position better off after the fact. Anything can be bargained for from pay to vacation to the conditions meriting a strike to barring strikes all together or having the increase in Labor’s compensation borne solely by the employer (as opposed to ripping off the customer by passing the cost along—some of you act like the employer’s profit is inviolate. It is not.). Besides, it is more efficient to bargain one comprehensive contract than bargain an at will arrangement for each and every employee. That is true, unless of course you’re right wing extremist rolling over to the first lowball offer from management.

Collective bargaining defines S&D.

One last thing. Management sets the tone, process and goals of the company. Labor does the work. If management mismanages the company to the point of torpedoing it, Labor is left with few alternatives. So stop blaming Labor for management’s failures in the closing of companies. It’s simply not true.

Two things will happen. Either you’ll think about this matter and expand your understanding. Or you’ll hunker down on your ignorance of the world of bargaining that is grounded in your anti-government and anti-labor / class prejudices. Try an honest assessment of the matter and then act in your informed self-interest. If not, I mean why put yourself out? It’s only your dignity.
